RandyMarsh Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 (edited) The numbers may or may not back it up but to me it feels like Santana is Nelson Cruz light in terms of being a Tigers killer so seeing him stay in the AL Central playing on our biggest rival doesn't exactly thrill me. I remember him hitting a walk off bomb off of Benoit in a crucial late season matchup when the division was still up in the air, and here we are nearly a decade and a half later still going to have to face him in likely/hopefully big divisional matchups. The expensive guys are still there, though (Bregman and Alonzo). Maybe a trade is still possible, or do we pivot and try and solve our RH power bat via the OF (Teoscar or Santander)? IdahoBert Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 The guy played in the Mexican leagues. You don’t see that much often on a résumé. Doesn’t want to give up. If he does well, it would be a great feel good story. Quote

Mr.TaterSalad Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 (edited) I hate to break it to you, but when Mob Queen Marian Ilitch passes Chris Ilitch is going to bulldoze Copa, with taxpayer subsidies, and put up a parking lot. Comerica Park will become Comerica Lot with flex parking rates ranging from $25-$85. If you read the history of Joni Mitchell's song Big Yellow Taxi, you'll know that Mike Ilitch and Chris Ilitch have song writing credits. That song is actually about downtown Detroit. Mr.TaterSalad Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 That's the other thing no one is talking about. No player worth a damn is going to sign here when the owner makes you pay for your own parking, with flex parking rates. I can go to the Yankees or Red Sox and get a lucrative contract with roster bonuses and player incentives. Or I can play for Chris Ilitch and be forced to pay $50 for parking at practice and home games. Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 In all seriousness and poking fun at Chris Ilitch aside, what deal seems more likely to happen at this point, Bregman or Santander? It seemed like we were really high on Bregman at the start of free agency and now I'm not so sure. It seems like Santander is getting a more traction over the last couple of days. Quote

He had a very solid season in the minors last year. Might not translate to the majors but it seems more and more that minor league stats aren't always a harbinger of things to come. FWIW, Beck did a piece on Navigato in August talking up his bat but he also said the glove was not likely to play as a full time MLB shortstop. Quote

I don't think either one is coming here. Santander has bust written all over him and Bregman probably wants way more than teams are willing to pay. Bregman's steep OBP drop is a concern and he might be better off with a 1-year "Prove It" deal if he wants the big, big money. And if that's the case, he probably wouldn't want to come to a team that plays in such a big ball park. Quote

papalawrence Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 I have a hunch they will add a versatile right handed bat, someone who will take a shorter deal. They will balance winning now with a larger focus on longer-term success. I think Jung will get a long look at 3rd. Tork will have a shorter leash but still have a chance to prove himself at 1st. Malloy will get more at-bats. And Dingler. Harris will not make a big splash but will trade for or sign a bat similar to Vierling. Several rated infielders are a couple years away. This is why I still think trading Skubal is a real possibility. I do think Flaherty is a real possibility yet this winter. He was texting Detroit players during their run last season. He clearly liked it in Motown. If Det matches other offers I actually think he would choose Detroit. Quote

Shinzaki Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 AJ and Fetter both seem to be cognizant of the need to give pitchers a rest....they are the anti Dusty Baker Quote

Flaherty also said he loved L.A., for what it’s worth. What kind of contract is he looking for? I liked the contract he signed last year but I don’t know that I’d be interested in committing to a high dollar deal with years and I’m sure that’s what he’s looking for. Harris signed his Jack Flaherty for 2025 with Alex Cobb. I’d be surprised if he does much more as far as pitching goes. There are several potential starters that pitched out of the pen last year. I think this is where he will fill out the rotation. Quote
RatkoVarda Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 I would sign RH OF Austin Hays, giving them a very solid OF/DH rotation of Greene-Meadow-Carpenter-Hays-Vierling (with Vierling getting some time at 3B) and I would trade a whole lot for SS Bo Bichette (Jung/Olson/+ more ?). Appears as though Toronto is willing to move him and replace him with Gimenez instead of having him walk for a 4th round pick in 2026. Meadows/Bichette/Greene/Carpenter/Hays/Vierling/Keith/Tork/Sweeney/Ibanez/McKinstry/Rogers/Dingler wins the AL Central. FInd 2 decent choice to stash at Toledo for 1b and C should Tork and/or Dingler bomb. Quote
