At least they didn't have to give up Boyd to get him!

I am neither excited nor unhappy with this move.  He has a career 112 OPS+ as a middle infielder and crushes lefties and he's just 27, but his fielding numbers are bad.  It will be interesting to see where everyone plays in the infield.

I'm pretty sure Hinch was 100% in on the deal and he and Harris already worked out the potential configurations before they signed Torres.

But it doesn't really give Hinch much infield flexibility. Unless he moves Keith over to 1st or 3rd base? It really wasn't a position of need. I guess a bit surprising, more like he was available and more affordable than other positional free agents?

Keith back to 3B makes the most sense.  No need to sign stupid Bregman

This.  Keith was going to have to move off 2B at some point.  Give Jung another season at AAA.

Prioritizing the bat.  Big addition to our lineup.

Gleyber Torres was only 17 years old in 2014 when I saw him playing for the Boise Hawks in the Northwest League as a part of the Chicago Cubs organization. He was the youngest player on the team, and he looked more refined than everybody else playing. He actually looked like a major league player in the field. At that level of play, you simply hold your breath when a ball player throws the ball to first base since you expect them to throw wild or bounce it and he was right on the money. He was honestly breathtaking for this level of play. I don’t know about his general deficiencies as a major league player but this move still makes me happy.

Like I say, maybe we see something in his defense we think we can fix? If true, he would be a much better glove at second than Keith would.

Keith also had a below average wing for second base. This after his prospect card said he had a cannon for an arm. I don't know how to square the two, unless Keith has been purposely throwing slow from second to first?

Oh great, now no room for Hao-Yu Lee,  he was going to be the breakout star this year

Wings fire their coach

Tigers sign Torres

Big sports day around here.      Who will the Pistons trade for, Paul George?

The Pistons have already equaled last year's win total.   Monty Williams sucks.

I am sure Hinch has the infield plans all mapped out and it's probably not going to be as simple as putting Torres at 2B and moving Keith to 3B.  There will likely be a lot of moving parts.  Ultimately, they have improved their offense, but their infield defense is poor.

Torres is getting one year 15 million according to Petzold, so that makes the deal a bargain and shouldn't prevent them from making other moves.  That makes me like the deal more.

He had a shoulder injury he has not fully recovered from

I think signing Gleyber means Javy won't be able to play. I do love these one year prove it deals. It's worked well with pitchers and now a young fielder could show Detroit is the place to sign these deals.

Not sure I agree.  None of the other pieces (Torres, Keith, Vierling, Jung) are SS, though maybe we’ll learn they think Gleyber can play there this season.

These were pre Torres plans, may or may not still be operative. If you are trying to get more RH capability, it’s McKinstry and Sweeney who have to lose AB. And Vierling in the OF also bumps a LHB.

I guess I should clarify I don't think Gleyber will play short. Javy, Ibanez and Tork were set to be the right handed infielders. They still have Sweeney and McKinstry at short.

Javy's surgery looked pretty serious to me. Potentially career ending. We'll have to wait and see because I'm just a moran speculating.
