I still don't want to give up on Torkelson. I could see him going somewhere else and hitting 40 dingers.

Remember Carlos Pena. Same situation

I just wonder if he was brought up too early and that’s stunted his growth.  They brought him up and he hit in the lower third of the lineup.  The bottom third of the lineup isn’t where to put a 1B bat.  And the Tigers weren’t so offensively blessed that a prospect that’s ready for the show should’ve been in the bottom third of the lineup.

I don't think he has enough trade value that it's likely he's going anywhere so he's going to get his chance to hit his way back into relevance. There's a lot of potential there but he has to find an approach where the production matches the potential. It's sports - it's supposed to be do or die.

Carlos was a late bloomer - we didn't move him until his age 28 season, Tork is going to be 25 this season so he's probably worth more to the Tiger's as a watch and see than in a trade, but you never know, if someone makes an offer.....

When Tork got here I think it was pretty clear the Tigers org didn't have any solid system for hitting development. In the last couple of years we have started seeing guys take steps here and there - Bigbie, Workman, Meadows are cases of guys that looked stuck earlier and then made some progress (at least relatively) more recently.

When I started my career I also had to handle sales. We started from zero. One of my first customers, who were businesses, was from Paw Paw. I asked the guy if he knew of Charlie and of course he did.  When I would talk to him again he’d even mention running into him or family.

RIP Charlie Maxwell.  I have always been fascinated by his Sunday home runs.  40 of his 148 career home runs came on Sunday.

My mom used to say he always hit home runs on Ladies Days...

Regarding Charlie Maxwell, on July 29, 1962 my dad’s Elks Club drove all of us kids from Auburn, Indiana in a rented school bus to Chicago to see a doubleheader vs. the Yankees, where the Sox’s player Charlie “Paw Paw” Maxwell hit three home runs in the split.

I clearly remember him hitting at least one in each game and of my dad remarking upon it but I guess I lost interest and didn’t realize he’d actually hit three because I was 10 years old and I had to pee the whole time so my attention was somewhat scattered.

I did get to see Mantle and Maris, which was a big deal although neither of them did anything memorable aside from batting practice, but I was pretty disappointed that my first game was not at Tiger Stadium and some woman sitting on the first base side constantly ringing a loud bell was extremely annoying, especially because I had to pee.

This has been my take from the day they initially called him up. Avila was under a lot of heat to show the fans some evidence that the rebuild was beginning to bear fruit. I thought Riley was called up too early as well at the time.

Thanks for this.  Any stories about meeting Abner Doubleday?

Afraid not. I’ve pretty much exhausted my repertoire. Aside from Charlie’s three home runs in Chicago, being at the fifth game of the World Series in ‘68 and seeing Norm Cash hit one of his four homers over the right field roof at Tiger Stadium on one of those bat or ball days when I was a kid, everybody else here has seen a ton more games in Detroit than I have and I am envious. You have no idea how envious I really am.

Anyone else noticing the same weird thing about this article that I’m noticing?

Are you talking about the part where when he was on first base Cabrera would josh around with him and say “You should come and join the Tigers and be on a good team.”

Nobody calls you "the Envious Kid" like in the westerns.

converting him to RH OF would be an interesting try.

agree; but if his attitude is as poor as Yankee fans would have you believe, he is not interested in learning RF.

That would work better for Detroit and would help Torres' FA market next winter, and while it sounds like he was told he can play 2B here, plans can change.

a reminder that Torres - Gary Sanchez - Aaron Judge was supposed to be the core of a new Yankee dynasty.

the fact that most perceive him as underachieving - even though he is a 2 time all star who debuted at 21 - makes the potential payoff for Harris here significant IMO
