Are you talking about the part where when he was on first base Cabrera would josh around with him and say “You should come and join the Tigers and be on a good team.”

Urshela should’of had more presence in the headline?

I mean, the part where they make a breathless claim of Miggy having said something, without either bothering to get any quotes from Miggy himself, or being unable to. We are only taking Gleyber’s word for it.

I’m not saying Gleyber is lying about this—I take him at his word on it. I just find it interesting that a Tigers beat writer couldn’t get someone who is listed as working for the Tigers on their front office directory to actually go on record with the welcome.

Probably everyone will disagree with me on this, but I think this says a lot about Miggy’s relationship with the Tigers now.

He did talk to Cabrera and Cabrera asked "Who the **** is Gleyber Torres?"

But Petzold had a deadline to meet, so he went with it.

I didn’t think about going directly to Cabrera for quotes.  I don’t know, seems like not much to me unless Cabrera were to come out and refute it.

As for Cabrera’s relationship with the Tigers, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s only ceremonial in nature right now.  I don’t think there’s anything necessary awkward or nefarious if that were true.  The guy has lived the baseball life for years.  If he wants a break from it, maybe he wants more family time right now, or is sick of the travel, or whatever the case is, so be it.  I would think that the “special advisor” roles are like that for former players/managers.  You get a title, you’re invited to things like Leyland’s number retirement, you’re a combination mascot/official.

Now Leyland probably does do some scouting and serious baseball work that the front office can use.  It just seems like that’s his nature, a true baseball lifer.  Maybe it’s not in a full time capacity like some of the other (younger) front office personnel.

That’s my wholly unqualified opinion.

Couldn’t agree more.  I don’t think there is anything to read into the relationship between Miggy and the Tigers.

There is no reason to doubt it. Why are we gonna waste the time going to miguel, during the holidays for some quote to confirm what we know. It's a waste of time and accomplishes nothing.

You're reading way too much into it.

I was right about at least one thing: nobody agrees with me. 😝

Not to mention if you want to talk to Miguel you have a much better chance of getting through in Spanish. Petzold hable espanol?

Each side in the Torres deal is using the other as a partner of convenience. He has no intention of being here in '26, the Tigers no intention of paying him what he is going to want if he does have a successful '25. Keith's tenure at 1st could be a short one.

I think they want 2B free for Lee or McGonigle in ‘26.  Or even Jung.

Rumor is Tigers are interested in Bregman plan A, Santander plan B or Kim plan C.

Bregman's glove is obviously good, Sweeney seemed OK as far as it went. If Keith can be a solid 1B then maybe living with Torres at 2B will be tolerable -- IF they land Bregman.

Kim is also a strong fielder, although his health makes him a question mark.  Having Torres at second, Jung/Vierling at third and Keith playing a new position wouldn't give me a lot of confidence in their infield defense.

they are still woefully thin at SS. Harris must address the position. Kim may be worth the risk at some price point + years.

Sweeney - a complete question mark, who has performed the opposite of the conventional wisdom surrounding him (supposed to have a sure bat and would likely move to 3b)

McKinstry - fine as your 13th position player, as he can fake at SS for 20 games a season, but he is a LH bat like Sweeney

Baez - generously estimating there is a 10% chance he gets 50 ABs in Detroit before he is released.

Kreidler - not a ML hitter

Navigato - really?

I was really disappointed with Kreidler. He looked really good on defense in '23 but the injuries must have taken a toll. He did not look good this year. I doubt he'll be on the roster all year.

With the Tigers reported to be "all in" on Bregman,  There appears to be several players who will be on the outside......looking in. Good problem to have I suppose. Lots of competition during spring training.  Plus, some actual trade material after some of the outsiders had some success at the end of last season.

But of course, the Tigers being "all in" does not mean that Bregman or his agent is.

I think that Bregman could be a guy like Ian Kinsler and give the Tigers a spark for three or four years.  Not sure on years after that. But I think that he is younger than Kinsler was when he joined the Tigers.

I’ve always assumed this offseason that SS was going to be solved internally.  I think it’s Sweeney and another internal RH option, or trade target.  If they sign Kim, I think it’s for 3B.
