It's untested.  I don't know if something like that can work for a full season.  I think it requires too many pitchers to be reliable.  A couple of injuries to key relievers would probably blow it up.  I could see a modified version - where you maybe have 3 or 4 solid starters and some bullpen games.

I agree but they have 7ish starters as is, with one due back mid-season from injury and a few prospects on the farm close (Hamm, Melton). From a pure numbers standpoint you can never have enough, but I will say there are plenty, especially when the worst case scenario is buffered by that break glass emergency strategy.  You are better off with the bullpen day than throwing out a 40 grade pitcher.

The risk with Verlander and Scherzer is they may be Maeda without the humility to accept a role demotion.

Right, I am not interested in Verlander/Scherzer either.  I was commenting more on trying to repeat what they did at the end of last year.  I hoping that at any given time during the year they have enough healthy and successful starers where they don't need to have bullpen games almost every day.  It's good that Hinch knows how to it when necessary, but I wouldn't want them to overdo it.

There was similar rhetoric this time last year about how they wouldn't be doing that kind of stuff, but attrition happened and they ended up doing it. I don't think you plan for bullpen days, but know that in a pinch you can do it over signing an abundance of veteran pitchers. Between Skubal, Webb, Jobe, Olson, Mize, Manning, Hurter, Madden, Montero, and Maeda, chances are you have five starters somewhere in there.

Verlander maybe…Scherzer broke it up bad with the Illitch family.

Are you saying the Illitches would hold a grudge for this long?

Oh yeah, #91 still isn't retired by the Red Wings.     Yes they would.

The Tigers need a closer that misses bats.

Or a misser that closes bats

Shelby Miller blew 8 saves last season. Hinch just kept sending him out there. We could have been fighting for the division instead of hoping for the Twins to choke away a wildcard spot. Find a closer to even give us a chance. Starting pitchers are important but many of the games are decided by bullpens.

Yeah shocker.  I have never known the peoples of the Mediterranean diaspora to hold grudges.  And of course my scot’s-irish in-laws just forgive and forget.

So much for Verlander as an option for us …

Realistically, I don’t think the Tigers were interested in Verlander. The Giants got a one year deal which is exactly what you would want with Verlander at this point.

Agree. I believe it was Harris who signed Cobb to a contract in San Francisco in 2022. Cobb has been injury prone for the last three years.

Morton has started at least 30 games in each of the last six nonCOVID seasons.

I liked Buehler at $21M better than Cobb at $15M.

But he didn't love us back...

Can we get Flaherty back for a couple more years?

Flaherty is looking to get paid.  I don’t blame him.

Teams are probably still unsure of his inconsistency over the years.  I don’t blame them.

Open question to anyone, how many years would you give Flaherty?  I can’t see more than 3.

There are only maybe 2 or 3 starters on the market left that I’d rather have over just starting Montero or Hurter.

I’d prefer Montero and Hurter starting out in Toledo due to depth at the MLB roster. Skubal, Olson, Cobb, someone else, Mize/Manning?

I am starting to get the feeling that Mize will not be in the starting rotation much longer.

I don’t disagree with that either.  Just saying most of what’s left isn’t better than our 5-7 rotation options, especially when you add in the possible cost.

I feel like this spring is gonna be the deciding time on Mize and Mannings future with the club.
