I always chuckle when Toronto ends up being reported as an option for a big name free agent.  Nothing against Toronto as a city or even anything against franchise as a whole or the fans—-but outside of just the money and differences in taxes from the USA—-what is the motivation for a star player to want to be there?

Youre in a division with the Yankees and Red Sox—who are always going to spend more to be more competitive than Toronto will be able to.  Add to that now the Orioles and their system loaded with tons of young top prospects and the Rays top talent development.

You’re playing in the Rogers Centre, while nice, is a 36 year old ballpark.

They don’t have especially well regarded management or coaching/training staffs—compared to say Detroit, who has a World Series Winning Manager* and arguably the top pitching coach in the league.

The odds that you’d sign there, be a part of a half-assed rebuild and then get traded somewhere else when they realize the window has closed again is very high….

Both of their other young stars will be free agents after this year—and it’s highly unlikely both re-sign…..especially if Toronto is out of it by the trade deadline this year (which they will be regardless of Sasaki)

Not saying I want to see him go to SD or LA, but…..bro, give some other organizations a better look.

Yes, and not only this—they have not extended Vlad. Can you imagine being a big-time free agent committing to years in Toronto and watching Vlad sign with the Yankees or Red Sox next winter?

these are just fans doing a podcast... not much different than what we all do here day in and day out.  They have a microphone and camera and headsets.  When you have to fill up an hour, especially in January.... what the hell else are  you going to talk about?  I couldn't fill 10 minutes.

I'm with chas... I don't care if they sign anybody.  I'm also ok if they sign Bregman but only if the story is "How did they get him for that little?"

Stavenhagen has access. His buddy is just a fan with a microphone.

I don’t know what you’ve read over the years regarding JV’s character, but I do know two HOF managers would vouch for his character all day long, Jim Leyland and Dusty Baker.
Truth is, the Tigers just weren’t interested. So be it. I think this was a mistake but obviously I’m in the minority here. For me, it’s not all about nostalgia. It’s about getting a guy with tremendous upside (he’s healthy as per the Giants physical results) and he wants to prove he’s still got it. I would bet $15 million on the guy. His work ethic is top shelf. It’s not about getting the band back together, so to speak. I think Verlander in the rotation would be a plus for the Tigers.
As far as the “carefully-constructed young clubhouse” is concerned, I couldn’t help but envision a sign above the clubhouse door reading, “SAFE SPACE” 😉

I agree—Jim Leyland and Dusty Baker would never share any negative impressions of Justin Verlander with us.

I would have been OK with signing him for 1/15, and I said so prior to his going to the Giants. If Harris thought he was a good fit and Verlander thought this the Tigers were a good fit, he probably would have, and i would have liked that. But he didn’t sign with us, for whatever reason, and I don’t rue that even a little. Now he’s signed with a team with a GM whom he faced on the field, which based on his press conference, seems important to him. Mazel tov, Justin, best of everything to you.

Agree, although I would add I care less about “how did they get him for that little?” than “how did they get him for that few?”

We actually won a playoff series last year not only without making any acquisitions, but by selling off a reliable pitcher in the middle of a great year.

Was that super lucky and we could never do it that way again? .

The Tigers run last year was beautiful and historic. It was also unprcedented and probably won't ever happen again.   So, yes I want them to make acqusitions that can help them get back to the playoffs.   Not just any acquistion though.  Note that you were responding to a post where I was agreeing that they didn't need Verlander.

I also don't care at all how much they pay them per year. If they can get someone for a low number of years and high annual value, that is great.

I want Bregman and Flaherty because I think they will be good and help the Tigers win games, not because I care how much money Ilitch spends.  If they can get them for shorter term and less risk, then that's better.

To clarify, I don't care how much they spend per se.... I just am tired of dead contracts.  I don't want them in a position where money prevents them from doing something they would have liked to do in 2029 because they are stuck paying $30M for a guy not contributing.

If they paid $50M for a guy doing well and making the team better... I don't care.

If Sasaki does not choose the Padres, he will have revealed his agent and himself as being completely full of **** about wanting to avoid humongous markets.

Someone here noted that the new 'Fanduel' deal is probably paying the Tigers something like $15M/yr less that the 'Bally' deal before the bankruptcy. Assuming that's true, I have to think that is what is really driving the increasing split between the teams that continue to commit long term money and the teams that are just refusing. I think for any number of recent decades most teams had pretty rosy projections about the rate of increase in revenue so they didn't worry a lot about committing what they knew would be dead money in the future, but if a bunch of teams have now actually seen a year to year decrease in media revenue (and I would assume that a lot of teams did worse than Detroit in the Sinclair bankruptcy) that has to be culture shock for those ownerships.

It's easier to flip Cobb at the deadline than Verlander should the need arise. I also do not think Bregman will sign with us nor will Captain Jack unfortunately but it is also ok with me. I am hoping for Kirby Yates and Randal Grischuk so we have another closer/ back end reliever and platoon RHH that is good defensively.

Curious…. Why do you believe it would be easier flip Cobb before Verlander as they have would have been like contracts?

If they just let Vlad walk…..oof.

If you can’t get him extended by May, trade him and get some building blocks back.

I found one thing that said Rodriguez was born in 2016 and would be eligible for the MLB draft in 2038. I think that might be wrong.

Are Harris’ scouts really that good? 😁
