If we keep getting into the playoffs, we'll have to look elsewhere to pick up from the drop in draft rank.  International is really a lightly tapped resource for this team

Curious…. Why do you believe it would be easier flip Cobb before Verlander as they have would have been like contracts?

Twofold. one Verlander probably would want control over that and secondly the potential fan backlash if we signed Verlander only to trade him four months later. IMO.

Isn't Verlander guaranteed some protections from trades because of his seniority.  Now, Alex Cobb probably also would have that level of seniority too.

Unless it changed I think you have to not only have 10 years of service but also have been with your current team for 5+ years to get guaranteed trade protection.

Makes sense.

present power for Latin American teens is something that Avila always seemed fascinated with

i don't know what I talking about obviously, but it seems that hit tool and other abilities are more important present skills for these kids, and then you hope they can grow into power

Randy is correct. No trade clauses can be included in contracts, but the automatic ones come from 10-and-5 rights.

From Major League Rule 6(e)

Quote

The contract of a player with 10 or more years of Major League service, the last five of which have been with one Club, shall not be assignable to another Major League Club without the player’s written consent.

So he’s Roberto Campos 2.0?

Actually, Campos has hit for decent average, but his power hasn’t emerged yet.  Not necessarily old at 21, but a bit disappointing.

We’re signing Jose Ramirez!

53. Jose Ramirez, C/OF, Venezuela (Tigers)
Athletic enough for catcher and cf.  high baseball IQ, good swing decisions, uses whole field.

And these are ranked by projected signing bonus.  So Rodriguez is projected to sign for the 4th most $

61. Carlos Benavides, C, Venezuela

advanced catch-and-throw skills for his age. …..Benavides is a righthanded hitter with a line-drive approach and doubles power.

On MLB yesterday when I clicked on it and scanned the words “return” and “Flaherty” adjacent to each other I gasped thinking “Oh my God they pulled the trigger on something big and surprising and re-signed Flaherty! They’ve become BIG SPENDAHS!” No, they didn’t.

It’s not like I ever wanted or expected them to. But I guess I learned that I harbor some of that “Evelyn Wood Speed Reading“ technique inside me where you grasp an entire paragraph at a glance instead of reading word for word.

I'd love to be 21 again.  But with the knowledge about life I have now.    Tell ya what, I wouldn't put up with the crap I did the first go round.   When people show you who they are - believe them, and run away.

Does Campos start the year in Erie then?  A third year at WM basically destroys his prospect status I would think

Parker Meadows played parts of three seasons at High A, so it’s not horrible if that happens.  Again, he’s still very young.

It’s not that he doesn’t hit the ball hard, he does, he just doesn’t hit it in the air enough.

Sucks.  I was making $3.35/hr when I was 16.

I was making 40-50 per 1.5-2 hr game umpiring at that age. Good work if you can get it.

I made $1.60 an hour minimum wage for a summer job in 1969 when I worked at the newspaper plant in my small town of Auburn Indiana.

It was hot and dangerous work. And no, I didn’t love it or feel grateful for it.

I melted down the Linotype cold type used on printing presses into 50 lb. bars that could then be fed back into the Linotypes. (by the next year they switched to offset printing in these machines were eliminated). It was one of the few times in my life when I was really ripped after lifting those bars all day long all summer long.
