The 2024 team movie is out on youtube.  First, Its odd having to show Javier Baez in our highlight movie.  I watched the first 10 minutes of it and it was nowhere near as good as the .2% video someone made.   I'll keep watching but it was off somehow.   I get that its winter and its hard to be as stoked for baseball and what happened last year.   That playoff run was special.  Maybe its me.

I've watched that 0.2% video twice and may watch it again today. Encapsulated that incredible run very well.

Indeed, almost everybody’s older than me now. I’m 73 but my son who’s the youngest is 22 so because of him there’s all sorts of things I’m in touch with I wouldn’t be otherwise.

When Harris has fully demonstrated beyond any doubt with the Tigers what he’s capable of doing and feels limited by the parameters of this franchise, will he end up going to one of the big six teams? It seems inevitable.

If they can't get Bregman, I'd like to ee them get Kim for a short deal.  He'll miss the beginning of the season and then can either be a supersub or be plugged in at SS or 3B if one of their young infielders doesn't hit.  They could certainly use infield defense.

I thought Kim had signed with the Dodgers and I see there is a Hyesong Kim and  Ha-Seong Kim.

There's a band named Goose and a band named Geese.   It gets confusing.

The irony being, we got Harris from a Big Six team!

When I say "Big Six", I don't mean the teams with the six best records every year, or over the past X number of years. I mean the six franchises that get romanced the most in the media, year after year, almost irrespective of their records. The Yankees. The Dodgers. The Mets. The Giants. The Cubs. The Red Sox. These are the franchises that columnists, talking heads, and the fans they influence—whether consciously or unconsciously—get all dewy-eyed about. And therefore, they are also the franchises players with a choice tend to favor.

Harris may end up back in the fold of one of those franchises, but hopefully, before he does, maybe we can end up considered at least one of the next tier of franchises, along with the Phillies, the Braves, the Orioles, the Astros, the Cardinals, the Mariners.

Please don’t compare the Tigers to the Mariners. I live in the northwest and this is a personal issue for me. 😉

The Orioles.    Took them a long time to get back to being contenders and it seems as if they are doing nothing to stay there.

I feel like being a Mariners fan probably feels similar to having a 7 month long sinus infection.

I’ve lived in the Northwest for 38 years where people feel obligated to be Mariners fans, and when someone tells me they’re a loyal Mariners fan their entire life it’s like they’re telling me they’ve gotten used to eating dirt and grub worms and are OK with that.

My Grandpa got cancer when I was 4 and I guess at the time in the mid to late 80s Seattle had one of the best Hospitals for cancer treatment so my family uprooted us and moved out there for 4 years. So even though I know from pictures I went to Tigers Stadium first my earliest memory of going to a baseball game was at the Kingdome.

The Alvin Davis era, Mr Mariner

This popped up in my You Tube "Recommended" feed.   It's a newscast from Toledo's Channel 11 News from the Blizzard of 1978.

Very interesting how they presented the news from the actual news room and not a set.      The Weather "corner" was quite interesting too

But most fascinating are the commercials from back then (much less editing and more relaxed), and (the reason I am putting this here), an interview with Mark Fidrych from the Tiger Winter Caravan,  who'd only go on to pitch 3 games in 1978.      Just so heartbreaking to see how quickly it was over for him.

And the Toledo GoldDiggers hockey team.    Now I want one of their t-shirts.

Commercials changed drastically after MTV got popular.  It became standard that there are no shots longer than 3 seconds in any commercial.     Still the norm today.

I love the report about the guys from the bakery hanging out in the hotel bar...nice of their employer to put them up like that.  Of course if they had sent them home, they probably wouldn't have made it back.

I have family that were Merrill Lynch employees...apparently, the complex mgr was there day of the blizzard. One broker came in to work wearing jeans and a sweater in case he got stuck on the way in.  Idiot running the place got on him for not wearing a suit so he went home and did not come back

When I worked in radio, I had 3 different occasions where I lived at the radio station for a few days because of weather.   Pretty much the whole airstaff (the ones who didn't have kids) just stayed at the station.    Watched videotapes, played cards, played other games --------- and there MAY have been drinking involved.    Ssssshhh, don't tell the FCC.

I remember times like that. Did it a few times back in the day. My all time favorite was the winter of 1979. We lived in Richmond, Va, my wife worked for WRVA ( One of the old 50 thousand watt blow torches). I was not working radio at the time. I had just finished closing the Arby's I was working at the time, put chains on my Pinto, and started home. I heard her boss on the radio and mentioned it to her. He said come on in. It was the morning man, her boss, the overnight guy who usually did his trucker show from a truck stop about 30 miles away. We spent the night in the sales manager's office, I think there was about 14 inches on the ground the next morning.
I ended up manning the switchboard. It was the only time in my career that not one person called to ask if schools were closed. Just a lot of business and group closing announcements,

I purchased my first new car in 1980. It was a Ford Fiesta. Similar look to the VW Rabbit. Stick shift and sunroof. Living large back then.

I remember when I worked in Cincinnati, and there was the time that our morning guy "Dr. Johnny Fever" and our night guy, who we called "Venus Fly Trap" and our Program Director Andy all stayed overnight in horrible winter conditions the night before the Bengals-Chargers "Freezer Bowl" game.    It was strange.   We never ever saw or ran in to any of the other DJs -- ever.  It's almost like they didn't exist and our radio station building was so strange.   There would be windows to the outside that didn't make logistical sense when you mapped out the layout of the radio station.   You would open a door to our "bullpen" and the would be this large room where we all hung out, but then from the hallway there would be a window to the outside where that room would have been...........Very trippy place.

When Jack’s good, he’s very very good. The problem is he’s not good consistently enough for me to want him to sign for five years here.

IMHO, there is no way that SHarris will offer a 5 year contract. 'Maybe' a 2-3 year deal with opt outs?... maybe. That simply is not his MO and I agree with it.

A possible exception might be Skubal - but if he stays healthy (a big IF) Skubal/Boras would never agree with it.

Should we consider a Kerry Carpenter for Issac Paredes trade ? Houston can then sign Bregman. We need a third baseman and Houston needs an outfielder. Kerry is cheaper and has one additional year of control. Thoughts ?

I would make that trade, but it's a sideways more offensively.  They would still need help there.

I don't think the Astros can sign Bregman since they let him walk, so I think there might be some bad blood there. But if they could and would sign Bregman, sure, I would do the deal, and the Astros might be talked into it on those terms. They have no one decent for RF that I can see.

Ironically, if Skubal wins the Cy Young this year, or at least gets bunches of votes for it, that might slam the door on our being able to sign him long term anyway.

1973 Chevy Vega. It was a ripoff at $850 in 1978. Had to put in a quart of oil every hundred miles or so, because it had faulty valve cover seals. It got so I had to buy motor oil by the case and keep it in the hatchback.
