8/1/24 6:40 Royals @ Tigers

Recommended Posts

The Royals are an example of what can happen for a team like them or the Tigers when everything goes right.

They have Witt putting up an all time great season, 100 yr old Sal Perez hitting better than he did in his prime, Seth Lugo pitching like prime Maddux along with a host of other things.

Because of all those things they very well may be looking at the playoffs instead of being sellers like us.

they probably should have just stood pat last winter and sold at the trade deadline; instead they spent the owner's hard earned money, and now they are playing relevant baseball through September; also, some of their free agent signing did not work out; would have been better to evaluate the situation for another season or two (or three)

34 year old Sal Perez had a crazy rebound season, Witt made his star turn. Those are the only two offensive players on their payroll with a contract beyond this season. The rest are UFA or under control.

They signed Wacha to a Flaherty deal and Lugo to a Maeda deal.

They haven't had debllitating injuries to their lineup and their best players have produced. I'm pretty sure the Tigers could have done that if Tork didn't implode and they didn't get decimated by injuries.

If you look at the Royals lineup it's Witt, early in the season Perez, and then a bunch of guys at or below league average. Timely hitting has kept them afloat somewhat. Since early May they are .500 team. Credit the White Sox for keeping them in the playoff hunt. They are 12-1 against them. .500 against the rest of the league. Lugo signing worked out great. Ragans was a steal. The bullpen is pedestrian. The key, besides 13 games against the Chisox, has also been health. Very few guys have hit the DL. I really don't think long term the Royals are in a better position than the Tigers. A lot has gone right for them. Who knows if that continues next year.

Unless they have a huge talent infusion, I'd say it's not repeatable.
