Not talking about you here, but some people will never agree with this. I think they have impacts , but not tremendous impacts. If a manager does not have talented players, he can't make them win. That has been proven over and over throughout the history of the game as famous managers move from team to team.

gehringer_2
yeah - I wouldn't call Sweeney a 'failed' prospect -- it sounds like he was drafted partly on the physical upside but the skilla haven't developed as hoped. McKinstry doesn't bother me as a bench player, but like with all bad teams, he's a player getting too many PA for his proper role because there is no-one better. People talk about Jace but the person that replaces McKinstry has to be at least semi competent at SS and no combination of Jung, Keith, Ibanez and Urshella gives you a backup SS. Kreidler hasn't shown anything in his auditions. So they are stuck, with McGonigle at least another year away IF he pans out. Puts me back in mind that letting Iggy walk was another big roster value loser. Bob Uecker nailed when he said he was a good bacup catcher until he had to play too much.

I just wanted to see what anyone thought the better option is, and the answer is, nobody. Unfortunately. McKinstry is the only guy on the team who can play a bunch of positions competently, and mop up on the mound when we're getting blown out, all with good defense, and as you alluded to, those guys don't grow on trees. He's a terrible stick but he's a good glove, which is why he is exactly at 0.0 WAR. We have guys who are hurt or sent back to the minors and someone needs to take those reps. Who's going to do it? You? You, Lieutenant Weinberg? If anyone knows someone else out there who can do even as well as McKinstry is, they should let Harris know, because believe me, he'd like to replace McKinstry with somebody better. Anybody would. And he will be replaced when the time comes. In the meantime, all we can do is shrug and wait for guys to come back and start hitting their weight, so he can grab bench more than he does. Because that's what we need to replace what McKinstry is doing. Ibanez can't take all those reps as well as his own, plus he's no good on the left side of the dirt, and McKinstry is. Urshela and Ibanez can both play 1B/3B, Vierling can play 3B. Vilade or Madris can stay up and play 1B We have too many outfielders as is. All we truly need McKinstry for is to be a backup SS.
