IdahoBert Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Smokes just turned 80 a couple days ago. He is such a solemn looking guy I always thought he had to be a ton older than me, but in 2006 he was only seven years older than me which makes him nearly a contemporary of mine. I almost wonder if Jimbo was ever a child or if he came down the chute clutching a pack of Marlboro’s. Quote
1776 Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Tony LaRussa is also 80 years of age. LaRussa is showing his age more these days but several years ago you’d never have guessed they were the same age. Quote

oblong Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 This is fun to read. Some that stand out for me that I wouldn't outright hate. 1) Rolling over outs in innings 7-9. Meaning, if in the 8th the first two hitters make an out, you can end that half inning and get 4 outs the next inning 2) Resetting the batting lineup in extra innings. If the 9th ends with the 7th hitter making the final out, you can start the 10th with the top of the lineup. 3) Batter can "steal" first on passed balls/wild pitches, not just on third strikes 4) In a tie game, in the bottom of the 9th, the home team can start with a ghost runner, but they sacrifice their ghost runner in the 10th if htey fail to score. 1 Quote

Did anyone suggest getting rid of the designated hitter, still not batting the pitcher, and reducing the batting order to eight hitters? That's one of Lee's favorites. Quote

IdahoBert Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 I have never considered myself a sentimental traditionalist, but if they make any of these weird changes to the game it’s going to piss me off so much I’m going to take the $3.99 a month I spend on MLB radio and spend it on fast food in protest. But not at McDonald’s. 1 Quote
Tenacious D Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Want to make baseball more appealing? We need more Morganna’s running on the field, kissing batters. Quote

Motor City Sonics Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 (edited) Does anyone remember this.................were any of you there Tigers playing the Brewers. Saturday, June 9, 2001 Ray King comes into pitch for Milwaukee in the bottom of the 8th. Bobby Higginson hits a ground ball dribbler down the first baseline. King picks it up and doesn't just tag Higginson but swipes at him hard and Higginson took exception (as he should have). The two benches clear, but not a whole lot is going on, just a gathering of puffed out chests, basically. A fan jumps out of the LF stands (bullpen was still in right back then). and starts running towards the gathering by first base, he gets to the edge of the dirt between SS and 3B when the ball boy in the left field corner bolts from his chair and tackles this dude by the mound. It was incredible and the crowd and players from both teams were cheering him. I think the kid's name was Jeremy Jackson (there was a brief newspaper write-up the next day), he was a high school football player, but man did he close on that guy. What was that guy gonna do when he got to the players? Get in the fight? Did he think the Tigers players would back him up or something? I think after he hit the ball Higginson said "you mother f***er" and King thought was was talking about him when Higginson was saying it to himself. He was from Philly after all, that's practically a Christmas greeting there. Edited December 23, 2024 by Motor City Sonics Quote
