Michigan Football 2024 aka The Year Michigan has to Defend a Natty

Recommended Posts

There's really no reason for the defense to be this bad, not that draft boards mean everything but most have Grant, Graham and Johnson all being top 10-15 picks with Stewart on some being borderline 1st rounder. I can understand that alone not being enough against elite teams like Texas and down the road OSU but against most other teams you play that much talent should be enough to be a plus defense and thus far it hasn't been.

I had the privilege of watching this mess in person and just got back from the game. I won't say much about the game itself, as you guys have already covered all the bases. Let's just say Michigan's play was as ugly in person as it would have looked on TV. I did allow myself to be deluded into thinking at halftime that Michigan, thanks to Tuttle, would roll them in the 2nd half and win somewhat comfortably. So just two comments:

- Husky Stadium is a beautiful venue. During most of Michigan's offensive series, it was more appealing to turn my head away from the field and look out towards Lake Union

- Boy were there a lot of obnoxious Michigan fans. You'd think the scoreboard and performance would quiet them or slow them down a bit, but nope. I had a Michigan alum from the '70s on one side of me and a U-W season ticket holder on the other side of me, both of whom were great and had game-long conversations with both, but all of us were cringing every few minutes over the Michigan contingent that dominated several rows in our section

Point 1

You wanna blame someone?   Blame Harbaugh.   He bolted because he knew he was going to get punished and he left the mess for someone else to deal with.   But that's the kind of guy he always was.

Point 2

Much of the offense had to be replaced.  Not easy to do in one fell swoop,  partially because......

Pont 3

.....every other school is counter-recruiting Michigan by saying "Sanctions are coming, you won't even get to play in a bowl game"

Point 4

Sanctions ARE coming, but I don't think they are going to be that harsh.  Maybe a 1-year bowl ban for THIS season.  Take your medicine now and move on, it was always a rebuilding year anyway.

Point 5

Did you really think Michigan was going to have a perfect season again?

Point 6

If Donovan Edwards doesn't slip on that play, he might have scored a TD , he would have had a huge gain in the least.  He had a lane you could have run cybertruck through.    If he does score, whole different game.   But, it didn't happen.  Bad break.    (Also, two missed DPI calls against Washington that killed drives didn't help).

Point 7

Going on the road to Washington and losing is really nothing to be ashamed of.  Washington, even unranked is a tough team and you should have known the odds were not in M's favor going into the game.

Point 8

It's one game.   Now they (seemingly) have a QB that has a little bit of talent.  I know he's months away from his AARP card, but it seems like they finally found someone they can deal with.   Odd that they didn't get a better option, but I have a feeling all the "sanctions" predictions played into not being able to recruit a top QB.

Point 9

Get got a Natty last year and I am satisfied for at least the next 5 years.   Very hard to repeat, especially for a non-Southern school.

Anyone suggesting a firing of Sherrone Moore based on all he's up against this year,  has no idea what's going on.  My god, give the guy a chance.  He's a good coach.  He outcoached Frankllin and Day last year,  he just doesn't have the horses this year.

Yep, and the Lions losing to the Buccs (in a parity-driven league) means they're going 6-11, right?

Just calm the **** down.   It was always destined to be a 4 loss season anyway.  Maybe 5 losses.   Again, rebuild year, sanctions being dragged out (partially Michigan's fault for prolonging it).

I knew this would happen.  I knew that if he lost just 2 games idiots would start calling for his firing.

I'm not looking for anyone to get fired, but clock use and pacing have been terrible. It seems the staff is working on a play calling schedule that is convenient for them instead of one designed to stress the opponent or create on field advantage. That is just amateur coaching and is the one thing I am most disappointed to see after the Harbaugh regime's strengths at this stuff (and I say that not even liking Harbaugh). Was Moore not paying attention or did he decide none of it was important? That and the fact that every time they send in a play from the sidelines late it's a bust. They are either falling for feints by the defense or are just incompetent.

Harbaugh had a bunch of Juniors and Seniors with experience with their QB.......it helps with things like pacing and timing.  Moore & Co. have not worked it out yet.    When Moore was head coach for 5 games last year it was just fine.    Not having a really good QB is the heart of all of this - every bit of it.   QB is so vital that when it's substandard the whole thing falls apart.     Still wondering why they could not have done better on the QB situation, but I do think the whispers of sanctions and  no bowl games are part of that.

Wasn't the main reason, or really only reason, Moore was hired was for "continuity"? To maintain the program at a high level coming off a national championship and minimize transfer outs. If this year was a write-off anyways, then they could have looked elsewhere. Fans after the past 3 years would overlook a couple steps backwards this year if it meant building for the future. But instead I see a staff floundering even with some talent, whereas next year's talent level almost assuredly will be lower. Doesn't bode well unless they replace Moore after this season, which I don't see happening. Washington is playing in a new conference, lost its head coach, most of its talent from last season graduated and that which didn't instead transferred. But new coach inheriting bare cupboard has them at 4-2 also and playing better than Michigan.

in fairness to sherrone, washington had rogers lined up before the coaching change.  he just had to convince him to stay.

that's not to defend the job sherrone has done this year, but the qb situation isnt entirely his fault.

who had 7 losses on their pre-season prediction card?

they'll be lucky if they only lose 7.

i know the harbaugh decision put moore in a bad space, but everything about this offseason and this INseason have told me he is in way over his head.

there is no reason to watch them this season, they may not even make it to a bowl game.

we'll see if they give him the resources to load up in the portal next year.  theyre going to lose all their good players.

let's see how mad the alumni get after ohio state beats them 50-0.  i'm not even trying to be funny, theyre going to beat michigan so bad.
