they had 9 yards on 13 plays in the second half until mullings broke one for 63.

credit to mullings today.  he and the defensive line won them this game, but that was not really bully ball.  it was in the first half, but usc adjusted and whuped them in the second half.

yeah - you have assume that from here on, once they see Orji under center, teams will immediately stack to stop the run instead of waiting to see them move the ball.

hopefully loveland returning brings something in the passing game.  the few times he did look downfield there was no one open.

Good win by Michigan.  My initial fears played out almost exactly.  Michigan defense showed up and they got big plays in the run game.  This was a tough game to lose as USC gave it away from poor tackling and bad end game play calling.

A terrible introduction to Big 10 officiating as they missed obvious calls that directly resulted in Michigan TDs.  The missed the spot and no replay on the 4th down prior to Mullings long TD and a clear as day hold to open the hole for Edwards TD run.  They also ignored a blatant facemask on the last play of the 1st half that would’ve resulted in a USC FG attempt.   That’s football and sometimes nothing goes your way.

This loss doesn’t really hurt USC in the grand scheme of the new playoff world.  If they beat the teams they are “supposed” to beat they should make the playoff.  UM is the best defense they will play the rest of the season.

I fear things aren’t going to be as good for Michigan the rest of the way.    This may end up as the high point of the season.  They were able to take advantage of the surprise factor against USC but that will easily be countered and game planned by other teams now the tape is out.  The OL isn’t good enough to continue with an offense that is just run all the time and Im not sure how much more that defense can give.     Not exactly where they go from here to find an offense.

This game was a clear indicator that this group of coaches is still figuring things out and lacks whatever decisiveness or clarity of thought that they had under last three years Harbaugh.   The offense is Josh Gattis with a QB who lacks accuracy and the defense is Don Brown with Ravens scheme talent.

The 3rd down defense, particularly 3rd and long, has been the worst I’ve ever seen at Michigan.  This team is so poorly coached at every level.  Every weakness they had is the same as week 1 and worse because other teams continue to exploit it and no adjustments are made.  We can’t throw and can’t defend 3rd and long. It’s getting worse.

The defense has been a major disappointment this year. I think we all knew that the offense was going to be terrible(unless Orji was better than most expected) but I thought with guys like Graham, Grant, Stewart and Johnson the defense could still be borderline elite. Not the case.
