They could make it a point of emphasis, increase fines, etc., but college kids are going to do what college kids are going to do. Like when there was a movement to try to stop fans from rushing the field, you can fine the schools to high heaven, but you're not necessarily going to stop it. Quote

Can't wait to hear the Sparty afternoon show choke on bitter tears on Monday and bitch about Michigan trying to plant the flag. They have NOTHING to talk about with their team after the 41-14 drubbing they took at home vs. Rutgers, so in typical Sparty form, they will obsess over Michigan. Rutghers planted their flag at Halftime. I am on the air at 3, but I will get to hear their whining for an hour and I will drink in those tears. They'll be delicious. 1 Quote
Motor City Sonics Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 For Michigan there are generally two objective 1. Win a Conference title 2. Ruin OSU's season. Either one of those are accomplished and you feel successful. Sherrone Moore's season turned about to be fairly successful after all. Jim Harbaugh left things messy and it dragged out which tied his hands with recruiting. Plus there is still uncertainty with punishment over Michigan doing the things all the big schools are doing (gee, funny how a mic inside a helmet can get rid of the need for signals). The O-Line was nearly completely replaced, as well as much of the offense. They had subpar QB options with an O-Line that needs to gel and it was a recipe for disaster, which it kind of was. A lot of people were already calling for Coach's firing and I think this quiets it down - a lot. I think it would have been a horrible look for the first Black HC in the program's history to be a one-and-done. Now, everyone take a breath, he'll have much more time to recruit and the buzz from this weekend's game will help. I went into this season thinking 8-4 and they wound up 7-5. The 5 losses were vs. teams that (as of today) are ranked #1, #3, #10, #23 (road) and Washington on the road, which is always a tough game. With what they had at QB, that's actually pretty good. I like their chances for the playoffs next year, if they can get good QB play (and how could it be worse?). The O-line will be experienced and better and they'll do better with transfers. But man, you talk about a paradigm shift - in one day. And Michigan. Do the right thing now and give Moore credit for the games he coached last year. Harbaugh's gone, you don't need to kiss up to him anymore. 2 Quote

Michigan could have a 1-11 season, beat Ohio State, and be at the bar on the Monday after and say "I don't guys, it wasn't all bad." They could still finish 8-5 too. I would expect they go to the ReliaQuest Bowl against a mediocre SEC team or Mayo Bowl against a mediocre ACC team. Playing against a Syracuse, East Carolina, Florida, or Texas A&M are all possible wins. Quote
Hongbit Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 The staff figured it out at the end of the season but the defense should’ve been much better than it was for most of the year. What we saw yesterday should have been close to the norm especially when Will Johnson was healthy. I wonder if they run it back with Wink especially with the massive rebuild that needs to take place on that side of the ball. They will hit the portal hard but that’s still building almost an entirely new defense. Crazy to think about how much defensive talent they will have cycled through over the past two seasons. Quote
MichiganCardinal Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 I was curious who Ohio State genuinely wanted to replace Day with so I read a thread on 11W. Unsurprisingly, there is no consensus. One poster to their credit described it well as "looking to replace a 99th percentile coach with a 100th percentile coach" 66-11 (1-4) is a home run hitter, who strikes out when it matters most. You can't just replace a home run hitter with anybody off the street and expect him to continue to hit home runs against everyone, including the one who matters most. You're going to sacrifice somewhere else. The names they throw around are Dan Lanning (won't happen), Mike Vrabel (probably wouldn't happen and may not work even if it did), Marcus Freeman (have fun losing to Marshall and NIU and he also probably won't leave, and his rivals are down and out Stanford, USC, and Cal), and Brian Hartline, their current WR coach (massive risk). I think Day wins a playoff game, loses in the semis, and they keep him another year. Quote

The question is that now they have to pay players $25M a year, do they really want to pay a $37M buyout and the cost for a new coach. Quote

If they were writing blank checks last year, I expect that they will write even blanker checks this year. I just think when the dust settles and tempers calm they are going to see a coach that has won 10+ games every season and routinely is competing for National Championships. Maybe behind Door #2 will be a coach who wins 10+ games every season and routinely is competing for National Championships... but maybe not. Quote

Football is all they have. It is essentially the purpose of the University. There are no academic or research merits that matter to anyone. They want to win championships. They have won zero and only played for one in six seasons. The overall record is deceiving as well seeing how weak the teams from 5 through 14 have been in the conference up until this season. buddha Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 i think there's a better chance that Day quits than he's fired. i dont know if he really wants that job anymore. he's got a ton of money and may not want the aggravation and stress of being osu head coach. he could negotiate a lesser buyout and go be a pro coordinator somewhere. i would be shocked if osu ponied up $37m to make him go away with no obvious successor in place. I heard he was planning to miss the game so he could attend his son's Seniors Day game at Iowa the day before, but Ryan Day chartered a plane to get to Columbus on time. That final sequence was so lame. 1st down at the 25 with 45 seconds and you don't throw downfield once, keep repeating a play that isn't working: 1st down - incomplete pass out of bounds at the right sideline to the 27; 2nd down - complete pass to the right sideline for a gain of 1 yard to the 26; 3rd down - incomplete pass sails way out of bounds around the 40 at the right sideline; 4th - incomplete short pass to around the 28, only receiver anywhere close, standing around the 26, would have been quickly tackled if the pass had hit him. I greatly enjoyed listening to Karsch and Anderson this morning, knowing full well that Doug very likely had a vacation day scheduled for this morning that he decided to forego after Saturday. Quote
