Mr.TaterSalad Posted March 1 Posted March 1 I've been watching the combine and I came away really impressed by the IDL James Pearce Jr. from Tennessee. Kid seems like he has a really high athletic upside and a pass rush element to his game having had 7.5 and 9.5 sacks in two different seasons. Quote

He's 6'5" 245 #'s so he's an edge defender. As an edge, the Lions look at run-stopping first and pass-rushing second (for a starter). MUST set the edge, and pass rush is a definite plus... But to start... I believe Pearce does both quite well... so he would definitely be in their sights... Quote
MichiganCardinal Posted March 1 Posted March 1 FWIW RE Pearce: James Pearce Dropped Off Some Boards By Charlie Campbell Quote A few weeks ago in the Hot Press, we reported how some team sources said that Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr. was in danger of getting dropped off some draft boards. In that Hot Press, here was what one executive said about him. “He’s in danger of getting dropped off our board,” said the director of player personnel for an AFC playoff team. “Granted, we are a strict team in terms of character, but we have a lot of concerns, and I think he probably isn’t a fit for us.” In following up with some team sources elsewhere, other teams have a similar feeling. In fact, one team that needs edge rush help and is picking in the top 16 has dropped Pearce off the board, according to team sources. The 6-foot-5, 245-pounder had an electric 40-yard dash time of 4.47 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine. Plus, he also has multiple seasons of showing dynamic pass-rush ability in the SEC and teams like him as a player. That 40 time could cause teams to give him some more consideration, but sources across the league say there are significant character concerns, and Pearce is in danger of getting dropped off numerous boards. Maybe they don't decipher between Edge guys and interior DL as far as the combine projections go. Also, I just saw what Cardinal posted about him. If Charlie Campbell's scouting report is legit and he has significant character issues then I guess we can forget him. Quote
1984Echoes Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Yep. Ditto. PS: Yeah,,. the NFL Network was testing ALL defensive lineman both Interior and Edge and just calling them all DL's without differentiating... Quote

Anything that comes out of any NFL teams mouths needs to be strictly considered to be in a Schrodinger's Cat situation. It's both truthful and a lie until after the draft when it collapses upon observation to one state or the other. Quote

Mr.TaterSalad Posted March 14 Posted March 14 I did a mock draft today using the PFN mock draft simulator. I tried to do what I thought Brad might do. Ha, like I actually know. But what I really mean by that is draft guys with no character concerns, high RAS scores, high athletic upside, talented players who might have slipped due to an injury, and then looked a little bit at our team needs. I evaluated our needs as being DT, DE/Edge, depth on the offensive line at the Guard position, 1st (#28) Mike Green/Edge, Marshall 2nd (#60) Tate Ratledge/OG, Georgia 102. CJ West/DT, Indiana 142. Malachi Moore/S, Alabama 182. Ja'Corey Brooks/WR, Louisville 196. Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins/DT, Georgia 228. Jalen Travis/OT, Iowa State 244. Alijah Huzzie/CB, North Carolina Quote

Expand I followed this recipe exactly... or as best I could... So this is what I drafted (straight up, no trades), and I'll include RAS and other comments as to why I think Brad might look at a guy that popped up in my draft: 1st round - Kenneth Grant, DT, UM, 6'3" 330. Didn't show a RAS. Tyleik Williams kept showing up as available here as well. Both are DOMINANT run-stopping thick NT or 5T types who show they may have some pass rush skill, or could develop some, as well. Not Aaron Donald level... but either a few annual sacks and/or collapsing the pocket up the middle works here... I'd be happy with either one. 2nd round - Tate Ratledge, LG, Georgia, 6'6" 308, 9.98 RAS. No brainer. Savaiinaea was also available here and if Ratledge were gone I think the Lions would choose him as he also is exceptionally talented, thicker and nimble and aggressive, played a lot of LT but will move to LG in the NFL, but isn't quite as athletic as Ratledge with a 9.13 RAS. I'd still take him. But prefer Ratledge. 3rd round - Tyler Baron, DE, Miami, 6'4" 262, 9.33 RAS. Has some pass rush upside. Extremely athletic. Sav'ion Jones also consistently available and he is bigger, and may have pass-rush skills that could develop as well. Both are PHYSICAL and RELENTLESS (hmmm... makes me think they are "Dan Campbell" guys...!) I would be happy with either. 4th round - Kaden Prather, WR, Maryland, 6'3" 204, 7.04 RAS. Not a great RAS but I think would make for a good development guy at the "X". 6th round - Luke Lachey, TE, Iowa, 6'5" 250, 8.72 RAS. Good development guy as the 3rd TE. 7th round - Caleb Ransaw, CB, Tulane, 5'11" 198, 9.96 RAS. Good development guy at CB: Hasn't been a playmaker... but is VERY physical, doesn't miss tackles, has great speed and is VERSATILE (has played box safety, outside and nickel, and even inside LB). Sounds like someone we know might take a chance on him... 7th round - Glendon Miller, S, Maryland, 6'2" 198. No RAS recorded, but "aggressive, versatile, instinctive, strong ball skills and anticipation to jump routes, excels in run support" sold me... Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted March 15 Posted March 15 (edited) I was looking up what the character concerns were on Green because that phrase gets thrown around a lot to try and torpedo a guys draft stock or by a front office that wants the guy to fall to them. Apparently Green was accused of sexual assault twice, once in high school and then again in college when he was at Virginia before he went to Marshall. I know this organization hired a Head Coach with sexual assault allegations against him, but that was a different regime. This regime doesn't want any of that crap in their locker room or on the field. So it looks like Green is out. Edited March 15 by Mr.TaterSalad Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted March 15 Posted March 15 (edited) Was Kenneth Grant the Michigan defensive lineman caught with the gun a couple of years back? Edit, nevermind, that was Mazi Smith, not Kenneth Grant. Edited March 15 by Mr.TaterSalad Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Here is Mike Green directly addressing the sexual assault allegations against him at his combine presser. Quote

RandyMarsh Posted March 17 Posted March 17 (edited) I think Edwards was hurt by the fact that his stock was the highest after his true sophomore year so he had to return for another season. Since that junior season was so so he probably felt that it was worth coming back and presumably finally getting to be the man with Corum gone. Edited March 17 by RandyMarsh Quote

Expand RB was never going to be his future and he missed that opportunity. He must suck as a route runner or everyone on multiple Michigan offensive staffs missed that. If he demonstrates Amon Ra St. Brown level route awareness he would be as good or better than the latter's career possibilities. Another player with elite speed who had a middling and truncated NFL career was Denard Robinson. Edited March 18 by romad1 Quote
