And I can't see a team wanting to have to deal with his upcoming contract demands. But, IMO, if the Lions have to let one guy go between him, Hutch, Branch, Kirby or LaPorta, it would be him. LaPorta's contract should be affordable so he'll stick around. And defense players are NOT expendable. 100% in agreement. I don't want to trade Jamo right now because there's no real value in it. No one is going to give up anything higher than a 3rd and even with Holmes drafting ability I don't see a 3rd making a significant impact THIS YEAR. On a side note... I think Homes.com needs to reach out to Brad for an ad deal. I mean if they can't legally use homesisthebest.com, they probably CAN use holmesisthebest.com. Just saying... seems like a winning plan to me. 1 Quote
Sports_Freak Posted April 17 Posted April 17 Terrion Arnold is going to announce the Lions 2nd and 3rd round picks? Quote
RedRamage Posted Wednesday at 12:42 PM Posted Wednesday at 12:42 PM I continue to be amazed at how differently I feel about the draft vs. just a few years ago. I mean the draft used to be this HUGE thing. We'd all be speculating... wondering about trades, thinking who might fall a few spots. Hoping the next first round pick in the top 10 (where the Lions often picked) was going to be the savior of the franchise. Now I keep forgetting that the draft starts Thursday. Look at our 2022 Draft thread: https://www.motownforums.com/topic/99-2022-nfl-draft-thread/page/58/#comments More than 57 pages of posts BEFORE the draft started! Now, 1.5 days from the start of this years draft and we don't even have 10 pages yet. I know the old joke was always about how the Draft was the Lions' Super Bowl... but man... being on the "other side" now (ie, having a good team) it feels like there really was a lot of truth to that joke. 2 Quote

Mr.TaterSalad Posted Thursday at 05:59 PM Posted Thursday at 05:59 PM (edited) I suspect they will draft the best player available tonight, who fits their culture and has a first round grade on their board. If Holmes doesn't have 28 players with first round grades on his draft board then I think he is trading up for a player that is a BPA and his front office has given a first round grade. They are likely also not touching any player with character concerns, IE James Pearce Jr. or Mike Green. I like Mike Green quite a bit and feel he is the type of high motor, hard nose, physical, explosive, athletic pass rusher, who also plays against the run, that they might normally like. But I think Green's character concerns keep him off their board entirely. I think it is wide open as far as the position they end up picking because they will heavily lean BPA with a first round grade over any sort of perceived team need. That could mean they go G/C with a guy like Gray Zabel or Tyler Booker. It could mean a DT or DE like Kenneth Grant, Derrick Harmon, Shemar Stewart, or Donovan Ezeiruaku. It could mean taking yet another first round LB like Jihaad Campbell or a CB like Will Johnson. It could even mean a complete surprise pick like Colston Loveland or Tyler Warren at TE or Matthew Golden or Emeka Egbuka at WR. I would not be shocked if they picked a player at a position outside the norm that we all expect them to draft (OG/C, DLine). As far as who I want, I'd like them to draft in the trenches, either on offense or defense. I think there will be potentially a top talent available at either the offensive or defensive lines when they pick at #28. If they don't have a first round draft grade on the guy they probably aren't taking him. I would be ok with anyone Holmes drafts in the end because I trust him. However, I would prefer one of Derrick Harmon, Mike Green (I'm sure his character concerns will make him a no), Donovan Ezeiruaku, Mykel Williams, Gray Zabel or Tyler Booker. Shinzaki Posted Thursday at 06:29 PM Posted Thursday at 06:29 PM Drafting a S when you just locked up the best safety in the league is Brad Holmes 3D chess...so...Malaki Starks....if he's there. Quote

AlaskanTigersFan Posted Thursday at 06:59 PM Author Posted Thursday at 06:59 PM I hope Lions trade back or trade up. Sitting there doesn't make me feel good at all. Either pay the buck an move up or move back an get more assets to someone who wants an extra year on a QB or something but get another 2nd or 3rd out of the deal...... But that's just me...... Quote

RandyMarsh Posted Thursday at 07:06 PM Posted Thursday at 07:06 PM If you're in the trade back camp then hope that Shadeur Sanders or maybe Jaxon Dart drop and are available at 28, getting that 5th year option on a 1st round pick is extra valuable for QB so a team that picks early in the 2nd round that may have eyes on QB might be willing to trade up to ensure that. I'm fine whatever they do. It seems there will be a lot of talent on the OL and DL available at 28, so no need to trade up unless, like Tater said, they want to get a specific guy they have a high grade on. They should also be able to get an OL (like Jackson who I like much more than his teammate Simmons as he was an All-American guard who arguably played better than Simmons at LT when Simmons was injured). There are also ample DL likely to be available who fit their prototype throughout the second including both Ohio State ends and DT. So moving back into the early 2nd and picking up a pick for next year wouldn't be bad either. I don't think they are going to leave the draft with 7 draft picks though as there aren't that many spots likely to be available and they are more likely to use some to move up in some rounds or acquire more capital for next year. Jason_R Posted Thursday at 09:31 PM Posted Thursday at 09:31 PM I said it a few weeks ago, but I could see them moving up to 20, 21, 22 if one of their guys falls. Who are their guys? My gut tells me athletic freaks like Shermar Stewart and Jihaad Campbell. Otherwise they’ll stay put and pick the best guard available. Quote
Sports_Freak Posted Thursday at 09:56 PM Posted Thursday at 09:56 PM I was hoping to watch the draft but the talking heads on ESPN are all giggling like 13 year olds. Extremely irritating, had to turn it off. I'll just read the draft tomorrow, I won't watch those idiots. Quote

They're also covering the 1st round and are a little more adult than the gaggle of ESPN 13 year olds... Quote
1984Echoes Posted Thursday at 10:40 PM Posted Thursday at 10:40 PM The Texans already traded two 5ths (this year and 2027) to the Browns for their 6th and two 7ths. I could see Brad doing something similar... trading our 6th and two 7ths for a couple of 5th rounders, with one in a future draft... especially if he has a "Lions 3rd round grade" on a guy they really LOVE and he's slipped into the 5th round... It would make sense to chase quality rather than quantity... 1 Quote
Motown Bombers Posted Thursday at 10:56 PM Posted Thursday at 10:56 PM Isn't the NFL Live crew on ESPN different than their draft crew? Mina Kimes is pretty good, but I've noticed Orlovsky is starting to go downhill. He's getting a little too Stephen A Smith for my tastes. Quote
