gehringer_2
On second view, the result in France is not quite all sweetness and light. Le Pen's party still grew substantially and was only prevented from larger gains by an uneasy coalition between the center and left that may end up being unworkable. Think i saw vote totals were along lines of Macron almost 7m votes Socialists 7m votes LePen 10m votes
chasfh
I wonder how much the threat of Trump beating Biden here in the States drove voters in Britain and France to the polls to repudiate their own right wingers. I would bet that influenced the outcome a lot. As long as there are free and fair elections, hard right wingers will lose practically everywhere in the First World. There are only two ways I can think for them to win: (1) fix the election upfront; (2) overturn the election results after the fact. After that, staying in power is all about the muscle.
chasfh
Also, liberalism on the march even outside the First World. Some pundit made the point that this doesn't matter because Iran's "supreme leader holds the reins". While this may be true in a technical respect, the people are making their wishes known here, so we'll see whetehr it makes a difference. I am so sorry once again the gang chimes in. Biden was walking in really straight lines NOT wearing a mask around all his staffers and SS detail AFTER he told the world he had COVID 19. I was told that wearing a mask prevents the spread of COVID 19 but that no longer applies.
mtutiger
Didn't Britain literally just have an election? One where Nigel Farage's party won four seats out of 650? Edited July 19 by mtutiger

My relatives in the UK are staunch Tory's. The one line I got out of her was "we threw a bunch of charlatans out" and that pretty much corresponds to how I would have felt too. They were very pro-EU and that entire BREXIT fiasco was populist bull****. Britain was better off in the EU and Europe and the West are better off in NATO. Toss all this race war fear-mongering. I'm not having it. Stop selling crazy.
romad1
Another thing about the UK. The brown people in the Tory party were about the same as the number of brown people in Labour. The PM was from South Asia, the previous PM was Ukrainian. Liz Truss was a head of cabbage. They may have their Nigel Farage types but they know that racism is a non-starter on a broad scale. Unless people make it that way with fear-mongering.

A riot in Leeds is not Islamists taking over London - misses by about 270K. A riot in Leeds is to London what a riot in Chicago is to DC. gehringer_2
the Sky news reporting (https://news.sky.com/story/police-car-flipped-on-to-its-side-as-unrest-breaks-out-in-leeds-13180593) indicates this started as some locals were mad about social services actions. Doesn't sound exactly like threat to the nation stuff, but who knows? "The owner of a restaurant in Harehills said the disorder was linked to local children being taken into care, adding that some people responded by setting fires and "throwing stones".
