Does the point finally come when the only fair thing to do is send in a Seal team and extract Maduro to Gitmo? Does the rest of the world have some kind of obligation to save the well being of the population of what was once close to a 1st world country from being completely destroyed? Same argument as Iraq I suppose, but does it make a difference that Maduro's junta is still far less well organized or funded than the Baathists or even Isis? Not easy questions.

NYT with a story about Iran evacuating IRC/Quds personnel from Syria under a resurgence of the rebel forces there, with the Syrian government forces rapidly losing control of geography and Iran deciding it can't make a difference if Assad's forces are unable to stand up.

The Ukraine war reducing Russia's ability to project external power, Israel's dismemberment of Hamas and Hezbollah have created space for Syrian rebel forces to gain momentum. That's the one sure thing about the ME, while everybody is watching one thing, the action will emerge somewhere else.

Israel takes the opportunity of a military organization vacuum in Syria to destroy every military asset it can find on the ground in Syria - navy ships, chem weapons, military aircraft, missile,  etc.

Israel with the help of bankrupt Russia has changed the landscape of the Middle East in last 14 months.

Syria may be done with Iran though. Alewites are going to be thoroughly disenfranchised (if not disembodied) and whether the new regime is radical or not it almost certainly is going to be Sunni.

My dream is HTS is something unprecedented or at least unusual: a modern guerilla army with a leader who wears a beard that isn't worse trouble than which preceded.
