oblong Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 I hate the Royals almost as much as the Twins. The Tigers had their run from 2006-2014, throw in 2016 if you like. Meanwhile the Royals suck because they're the Royals. Then they have 3 winning seasons and from that get a loss in 7 games in the WS, then win it the next year. **** that. It's like you are wooing this girl for a long time with dates and romantic evenings, then some greaser comes along, takes her to the park, they do it, then he goes to jail for burglary, and you are left behind. They've won 2 WS since the Tigers last won one. The Royals. They're only reason to exist is George Brett memories. 1 1 2 Quote
casimir Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Might as well gain some ground on the Twins tonight. 1 Quote

I was shocked when I looked it up. 3 winning seasons in 20 years. Further, from 1995-2023, outside of their run in 2013-2015, they had one winning season, 83 wins in 2003. That's 29 years. 7 100+ loss seasons. 1 Quote
Sports_Freak Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 After we win tonight and the Twins lose tonight and tomorrow, we'll be tied with Minnesota. Quote

Even that one winning season was to no small degree on the backs of the historically bad 2003 Tigers -- KC went 14-5 against the Tigers in 2003. 1 1 Quote

Tenacious D Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 (edited) My AL Central hate (in order of most hated): 1. Indians 2. White Sox 3. Royals 4. Twins Edited September 18, 2024 by Tenacious D Quote
oblong Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 I hate Cleveland fans, if that makes sense, because of the mid 90's when they would flood Tiger Stadium. But the organization? I don't harbor much ill will toward them. They run it well. I sympathize with the White Sox a little bit because I hate the Cubs and the whole frat boy thing they embody. "What's the score dude?" is the stereotype of a Cubs fan. I think if I were from Chicago I'd have been a Sox fan. To be a Sox fan means you are probably a baseball fan, not just a bandwagoner. The Twins? 1987 and 2009... The Royals? As I said.... if htey hadn't won the WS in 2015 I'd not care about them. 1 Quote

That one was rough, but I’ve since forgiven them for laying down the last weekend in 2003 so we could avoid the all-time worst record. I sincerely hope we don’t extend the same grace to the White Sox during our last series of the season. Quote
IdahoBert Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 I have bad memories of expecting certain victories. I’m going to approach this game with trepidation and hope. I want to be like the man at the end of the Polar Express who can still hear the tiny bell from Santa’s sleigh when other can’t. Quote
oblong Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 It was just a week ago after beating Coloradio the first two games with Skoob going Thursday that a sweep seemed certain. Quote

The gist: Witt is the first Royal to post an OPS+ above 140 since the George Brett era. That is more than 3 decades. Astounding. 1 Quote

monkeytargets39 Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 (edited) 1.) Guardians- I hate them with every fiber of my being. The amount of goofy looking white kid pitchers that come through their system that turn out to be elite starters is sickening. Then every one of their great players just has a jerky smug face— Manny, Thome, Hafner, Ramirez, Naylor. Killed me to see Fryman end up there….he was one of my favorites. 2.) Twins- What makes me the most upset about the Twins is that they rarely try to be good from an organizational stand point. Yet somehow they’re always in the playoff hunt. Every Twins era has a replacement level player that absolutely destroys us but is garbage against everyone else. Nick Punto is the poster boy for this. At least the Guardians players that beat up on us were elite players like Thome and Jose Ramirez. 3.) White Sox- They’re just like a drug addict cousin who is always getting into trouble and has no future….yet you’re stuck being guilted into feeling sorry for him at family functions. As a kid, having to get my baseball fix on TV by watching Hawk Harrelson call Sox games on WGN was torturous. 4.) Royals- As irritating as their little run was and as much as guys like Mike Sweeney, Alex Gordon, Salvador Perez and now Bobby Witt Jr destroy us…..I can sympathize with how terrible they typically have been for my entire lifetime outside of about 5 years. I didn’t bother to look it up. KC hasn’t normally done stuff like this. In the past, they’ve let just about every good player slip into the hands of other clubs. Quote
tiger2022 Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Witt follows in the footsteps of such Royals greats as Angel Salazar, Buddy Biancalana, and Kurt Stillwell. Quote
IdahoBert Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 I don’t have any genuine animus for any of the teams in the Central. I just see them as obstacles to my enjoyment. And not having lived in the Midwest for over 50 years I’ve never had to mingle at games with their fan bases. So I enjoy a kind of distance from a lot of this and completely understand the ground zero enmity people who are closer to the action can have for other teams and their fans. I am in no position to be judgmental about that. Dealing with the unwashed masses of other teams is unpleasant. But being sheltered from all this in my own little La La Land out west, I have the luxury of focusing more on the adherents I’ve met of other clubs who are very literate fans and passionate about the histories of their various teams, and in this sense, like us on our better days. I enjoy that type of W. P. Kinsella collegiality with baseball fans from numerous teams and it’s sort of like Hinduism, different faces of the same God. But for the last three games against the White Sox, I have no problem forgetting what I just said and going all Lawrence of Arabia on them and yelling “no prisoners!“ and it doesn’t matter if the wild card is still in play or not. 1 Quote
