I also think there are likely 14 or 15 position players for the first round, so you will likely see Malloy and Jung. Malloy, in particular, if the other team is likely to throw some lefties. 12 pitchers for a 3 game series. Assuming Skubal eats 6 or 7 on Tuesday, that’s 21 or 20 innings for 11 other pitchers. They can take the extra position player for PHing duties, and that 14th bat is likely Mallloy. Maeda is off of the roster. The other arm is going to be an interesting call. Maybe I’m not thinking it through, but a candidate doesn’t seem all that apparent.
Edman85
One of Madden, Mize, or Jobe. They will tip their hand the next two days. Somebody who throws starter innings today isn't going to be available until Game 3. Starter innings tomorrow is a disqualifier for the series. And that spot might change from series to series depending upon usage/availability. I think they can take the extra bat with the off days built into each series. Maybe not in the very busy NE corridor but from Washington down to North Carolina they did and it was a pita. We’ve done the Richmond to DC run several times in the couple of years, part of my wife’s job. It beats having to drive I-95 and the $10 a day parking fees beat anything in DC, even if you factor in cab or transit fares. It’s tempting

romad1
So, Baltimore's win last night meant that no matter what they were the top wildcard and got three home playoff games. Ah well.

Minny definitely definitely chose wrong last night (that has to be the ugliest uniform since some of the abominations that Veeck put the WhiteSox in.) Are they allowed to make moves between series? Malloy is 2 for 21 in Sept and only 2 walks. He's right handed but he's almost no bat at all at this point. But in a specifics series can only be changed for injury.

It doesn't take away from the accomplishment of the first part to acknowledge that the second part was necessary to make the playoffs. Yes, most great comebacks involve one team surging and another one failing. It doesn't take anything away from what they did.
RatkoVarda
As AJ said, fantastic to clinch at home, and with a win. Royals I'm sure are thrilled, but they are on the road, and backed in after a loss, waiting a few hours to see the Twins final collapse
Charlie Maxwell Rules
A tip of the hat to the Tigers radio and TV broadcasters for their recent salutes to Tiger history. The recent mention of Charlie Maxwell on radio and TV (my favorite Tiger of all time), and last night, Jason Benetti’s tip of the cap to Ernie Harwell with his “stood there by the side of the road and watched them go by” comment. For those that never had the good fortune to listen to Ernie Harwell, after a batter struck out looking, Ernie would often say…”and he stood there like the house by the side of the road, and watched it go by”. Now they need to slip in a tip of the hat to Jim Price. Might I suggest “Yellow Hammer” or “The art of pitching”, or even “Nice area!” Once again, thank you broadcasters for your respect for Tigers history. With how much AJ utilizes platoon matchups and defensive adjustments, I’d be surprised if any position player is left off the roster. My guess would be Maeda and Madden are left off. game 1 is Skubal, 2 is Olson, and if we get to 3 its Mize as an opener with Hurter to follow. That gives AJ free rein to use Holton, Brieske, Jobe, Foley, Hanifee, Guenther and Vest situationally with basically all of them capable of multiple innings if needed. AI is also struggling, but he has some track record so if it came down to that choice I'd be more inclined give him the benefit over Malloy, plus he has defensive flexibility. Ibanez has been struggling. But as you mention, he has the defensive ability over Malloy. And I don’t think Malloy has really been used so much lately that he could be considered much of an offensive upgrade over Ibanez given their track records beyond lately. So, it seems to be it’d be Ibanez over Malloy on the roster. The only aspect that I think could give Malloy an edge over Ibanez is if there were a way for Malloy’s plate discipline to create enough of an advantage over Ibanez that it significantly swings the pendulum in his direction. It’s just hard to see that delta at this point. Malloy’s ticket to the playoff roster is via injury or 14 position players. I think we see the latter in round one for sure. oblong
Good problems to have. I don’t recall this in the past. This team doesn’t have the star power but I thinking deeper in consistency.
casimir
It seemed like there were a fair number of players’ parents on the field after they clinched last night. That’s a fantastic touch. I don’t know if I’ve seen that before.
