I've been very critical of him all season but it's usually hindsight. An after-the-fact knee-jerk reaction. With the roster he's had to work with all season? And certain players not performing? He's been nothing short of amazing. I've seen people saying the Cleveland manager will win manager of the year just because they won the division. And KC lost over 100 games all year and are close to making the playoffs. But nobody has done a better job than Hinch, nobody. At least, IMO.

partly I think we have hitters that are maturing and just improving their approaches, but I also think that the staff has gotten better at getting guys off of the pre-game meeting advice when a pitcher has come out deliberately pitching against the scouting report. It seemed early in the season hitters were not adjusting the 2nd time through when their 1st approach was not working - or at least adjusting less than they are now.

Listening to 97.1 and of course Valenti and his fellow Detroit sports hater Rico give all the credit to this situation on the Twins collapse and not the Tigers play. Said something like "none of this would even matter if the Twins didn't collapse so they are the whole reason you are going to the playoffs."

Of course nobody corrects them and tells them that the Tigers very well could finish ahead of the Royals and possibly even the Orioles so even if the Twins didn't collapse at the very least this weekend would be meaningful and have playoff implications.

And if the Tigers hadn’t payed well while Minnesota and Kansas City came back to earth, the topic would be about why didn’t Scott Harris bolster the club for the second half.

Playoff berths are given out based on the number of wins/losses, not when or how they occurred.  As long as Detroit has a record sufficient enough to make the playoffs, I don’t really care what the other 29 teams did or how they did it.

Vogt, Quatraro, Hinch and Espada all could win it

I look at Quatraro and Vogt as the front runners.  Now, I base that a bit on last season and expectations for this season.  Maybe last season shouldn’t factor in because teams have a chance to alter their situation during the off-season.  But as far as expectations, both have had to have gone over their expected records as of Opening Day.

Hinch and Espada kind of suffer from the same issue, and that is the paltry start to their seasons.  But I think Detroit’s second half is easily worthy of 3rd place over Espada.
