Mildly surprised about Montero. Would take him over Mize right now.

They seem to be roughly the same to me, pitchers who can't miss bats and give up too many hard hits. The difference is that Mize does have better control of the strike zone and can get more ground balls. Also, as a former 1/1, he's going to get more leash to keep failing, although I'm thinking next year might be his last chance to finally put something anything together.

It seems like he may be good in a relief/set up role if he can’t put it together as a starter.  He was throwing 97-98 this past week when he came in as a reliever.  That velo might make his breaking pitches a bit more effective.

So...Javy Baez. The roster clearly functions better without him being active. What do you do with him next year? I'm really not sure what you can do to get anything out of him - he's not all that tradeable unless you eat the contract and give him away for pretty much nothing. Even then I'm not sure somebody would want to take a chance on him. How do you handle him next season if you're not going to release him? Bat him 9th and use him every 5th day? Or really is it just time to release him and eat the loss?

He’s gone or on the shortest leash ever.  Very telling that he’s not with the team right now (he’s been working out, so capable of traveling).  He just doesn’t fit in.

It all comes down to whether this procedure makes a significant difference in his performance. If Javy comes to ST and hits, and then starts the season and is doing reasonable damage at the plate, he'll fit in well enough. If he doesn't, then yeah - you've got a problem. The worst thing that can happen is that for whatever the reason, they can't get a good read what his performance projects to be so things drag out into the early season and becomes a distraction.

If the performance isn't there, I don't see what they can do other than DFA him. Trade would seem impossible. You just hope the DFA decision if necessary, can come sooner rather than later.

He was using a cane on picture day in September to get around, so it could be that he is actually not comfortable traveling?

Possible he fits as a RH defender behind Keith and Sweeney, but you are 100% correct that his approach just does not fit at all with what the Tigers want to do.

I have tickets to game four in Detroit, and I'm guessing it's going to end up a 4:00 game because the stupid Yankees will be in prime time. That stinks, because my brother and nephew are supposed to be going with us, and it will be much tougher for them to get away from work.

Unless the Yanks sweep.  Typical of MLB they leave fans in the dark until the last possible minute.  So we won't know for sure unless there's a split in NY, or a team wins game 3 after going down 2-0.

I don't gamble because the house wins, and addiction can lead to a life ruining spiral, but...

Fangraphs has the Tigers at 6.6%. +2800 seems like a no-brainer if you aren't worried about the life ruining spiral of it all.

If someone were sitting in front of me telling me I can win $280 if I bet $10 on the Tigers winning the Series, I’d be like, sure, why not. If I have to seek out some website or app, though, then no sale.

I don’t know where they got these odds but the best I can find is +1200

It was a tweet that is a few days old—it included teams that have already been eliminated.

Just thought it was funny that the Tigers continue to overachieve.

*Gambling is bad and can be addictive.  Also, studies have shown that gambling can be a gateway to even worse behaviors, including making excessive Amazon Prime purchases and jaywalking.

I’m hoping to see the Tigers vs. the Padres in the World Series. And not only because I like the way it turned out last time < cough cough choke > 40 years ago. It would be an underwhelming spectacle for commercial interests and for temporary, fair weather fans who like football more than baseball anyway.

It would basically be a big “fail” for everyone but us, and for people who like all varieties of David vs. Goliath narratives. And I’m honest enough to admit that I would take pleasure in this even though it’s probably kind of small for me to do so.

Hey folks, just wanted to stop in and say I am having a blast watching the Tigers and am rooting for y'all.

A huge congratulations on the Francona hire! I didn’t see that one coming at all. Good to see he’s gotten his health issues addressed and is ready to get back in the dugout.
