He is certainly making the case that managers can make a difference.  I think the thing is that most folks see that as in game stuff and game results.  But there's more to that role than just telling guys to throw strikes.

absolutely.  a lot of his job is keeping players motivated and interested and used correctly.

I agree.  I think managers are overrated in general, but Hinch this year is an exception.  The one thing I think managers can do to have an impact is bullpen management and Hinch is nailing it.

i've never seen a manager take a team to 31-11 and a playoff spot with basically one starting pitcher.  one and a half good starters?

its been amazing what they've done.

No, I don’t think so.

Yeah, going back and doing some reading, I guess that was more of a 2023 thing. The December 2023 contract extension, even if it was only through 2025 and could easily be ignored if a firing was needed, seemed to put that talk to rest.

To be clear, I agree there was a lot of wishcasting here well into this year that Harris hated Hinch, Hinch hated Harris, Ilitch hated them both, that one or both of them were going to get fired, and that Leyland was going to came back on his Marlboro horse and save us all.

OK, I made up that last one. But the rest of it, pretty true for certain posters.

But I don't think there was ever any broad agreement or consensus here that Hinch would get fired anytime soon. Speaking only for myself, not only did I never think that even for a nanosecond, I've actually thought at points that Hinch might ascend to general manager under Harris, and that someone else, possibly George Lombard, would become field manager. I think that far less now. But even if the Tigers had gone 20-20 in their last 40 games and finished 76-86 instead, I would never have believed that Hinch was in any danger of losing his job here. If that were to happen, I would have despaired for the direction of the franchise, as I did once it became clear that Avila was never going to take analytics seriously.

Its as if the Saudi Arabia of wood and paper products wasn't on our northern border and we weren't already well situated with our own industries.   I gather that the average panicky person who shops at a bulk store thinks we import our TP from Belgium.

My wife works at a major retailer and one of her many jobs is to source the toilet paper. 98% comes from the US or Canada, and the TP does come from China is currently tariffed at 35%.  Also, the China TP is way below the standards Americans are use too.

Many things may be affected,  TP is not one of them.

This is why this website is amazing.

I saw some criicism of both Hinch and Harris, but I don't remember anyone here saying that they would get fired.  Not on this site anyway.  Sportz isn't here anymore.

MAX is carrying all AL playoff games including the pennant championship series. It’s a very serendipitous situation if you already have MAX.

do I need any particular package, or is just the most basic $10/mo-with-ads good enough? (never mind, finally noticed the little thing about the sports add-on.) and can I pause the live games?

I’m not sure I don’t think so. On my home TV my son has subscribed to the highest tier possible so I can see everything. But here where I’m staying in Central Idaho in the mountains I don’t think my friend has the top tier and I don’t see any indication that you have to buy an add-on. I guess I’ll find out Saturday, but Max is still telling me that this game will begin at 9 AM mountain standard time. I don’t know about pausing on baseball but I can pause on cycling races.

I think platoons have become pretty common again and I don't think they are that hard to figure out.  Adding a 26th roster spot and limiting pitchers to 13 has made platooning easier to do.  Hinch has done well in general, but his pitching staff management has been exceptional.

As much as I hate reliever roulette, the Tigers have been exceptional with the pitcher usage.

and for all we know, Hinch might have helped persuade Ilitch to hire Harris.

I absolutely 100% believe that.

Zaidi was just let go by San Francisco.  Hopefully Harris' ties to the Tigers are stronger for now than the Bay Area.

I can't imagine any scenario in which Scott Harris bails on the stabilized Tigers to go back to the hot mess that is San Francisco.

At the All Star break, wasn't it the general feeling that 2024 could well be Hinch's last year with the Tigers, by mutual agreement? Things have changed.

Somebody might have mentioned it, but I don't believe it was a general feeling.  Some didn't like Hinch because of the cheating scandal in Houston, but I don't people believed he would be let go.

There have been arguably bigger Tigers "moments" between 2007-2024 than Ibanez' hit yesterday. Final out of JV's no-hitters, the final pop-up to win the 2012 AL pennant, Miggy's 3000th and 500th milestones, Max getting out of a tense 8th inning jam against the A's in an ALDS, the 27th "out" of the perfect game. But off the top of my head, can't think of a more important or more exciting play than Ibanez' bases-clearing double* since Magglio's homer.  I guess it being "only" the wildcard round downgrades it a bit. But still, a massive memory.

*went to 3rd on the throw home.

Scott Harris would be an unprofessional dilettante if he bailed on Detroit — which is a crowning example of his ability at work as much as it is a job that needs to be finished as well as a work in progress —  just because he loves the Bay Area so much. I seriously doubt that he’s that shallow.

I do know that he still has a San Fran area code.

But also the Giants already promoted Buster Posey to the president of baseball operations.

Even if they were the worst GM and manager in mlb, they both have additional years on their contract and I can't imagine Ilitch firing them and then having to pay someone else to do the job

I have doubts that this hot streak is sustainable beyond this year, and I don't believe ilitch will put any more money than the bare minimum to bring in a few vets in the future, but that's a lament for another day.
