Even if they were the worst GM and manager in mlb, they both have additional years on their contract and I can't imagine Ilitch firing them and then having to pay someone else to do the job

I have doubts that this hot streak is sustainable beyond this year, and I don't believe ilitch will put any more money than the bare minimum to bring in a few vets in the future, but that's a lament for another day.

Why do you think the Tigers can't be a good team next season? I think this is just the start of a 6 to 8 year run. Get a couple starting pitchers, a power RH bat and we'll be contending for the division. Let's see...Boyd, Flaherty, a closer and Bergman.

My wife works at a major retailer and one of her many jobs is to source the toilet paper. 98% comes from the US or Canada, and the TP does come from China is currently tariffed at 35%.  Also, the China TP is way below the standards Americans are use too.

Many things may be affected,  TP is not one of them.

Coffee...sitting on the dock of the bay...watching the tide roll away. Whew...I have a furry cat, I can get by with no TP. 😆 But DO NOT mess with my coffee...

I don't like all the days off in the playoffs.  I wish it was more like the regular season.  I understand they have to have a day(s) off when a series season ends early, but there is no baseball reason for an off day on Sunday.  It helps the Tigers because it allows Skubal to pitch in more games, but in general I dislike it.

I'm not saying they can't be.  But posters expect every single player to get better next year and that just doesn't happen.

Sweeney, Jung, Meadows, Dingler are really complete unknowns whether they can improve or be productive mlb players.

Torkelson looks lost at the plate.  Greene has his moments but he is hurt a lot.  Rogers is what he is.  Carpenter and Vierling are solid.

they might all turn out to be great, but it's never as simple as people make it out to be.

Look at the 84 Tigers.  Everyone thought that team would dominate for years and they were slightly above average in 85 and 86 before getting throttled by the twins in the playoffs in 87 and that was the end of them.

I guess I feel like these guys have a lot to prove next season

All I can think of for the off day in between the first two days in Cleveland is that MLB doesn’t want too many games on at the same time for commercial reasons.

Weird you'd have that view because Illitch has really own shown the opposite.

They were 24th in payroll at the start of the season, 1 million ahead of Cleveland and Baltimore.

Only Tampa, Pittsburgh, and Oakland have substantially lower payrolls than the Tigers.

I'm not sure where you get the Ilitch has been willing to spend.  I get it that signing a bunch of free agents isn't necessarily the best way to build a team, but we'll see how he handles Skubal in the next few years.

The nauseating air quality that tortured Idaho and much of the Northwest for two months has returned as smoldering embers of fires thought conquered by rain and smoke jumpers burst back into flame thanks to stiff winds. After all this time I finally realized my Detroit Tigers Covid mask could protect me from the smoke and never once noticed the smell of burning plastic or rubber in the air until I took off the mask. At least there isn’t ash and incinerated pine needles falling from the sky as it was a few weeks ago, but it still sucks.

GO TIGERS ANYWAY!!!

Comet Tsuchinsan will be visible in a few weeks.  These always are signs of something.  I think it is a sign the Tigers are going to be the most unexpected WS champs ever

There was a comet in the sky when Julius Caesar was assassinated.

Halley's comet was in the sky when Flavius Aetius defeated Attila the Hun in a great battle.

Halley's comet was in the sky when William the Conqueror invaded England and became the eventual king.

Hale Bopp was in the sky when the Heaven's Gate cult committed suicide.

And now, this comet will be in the sky when the Tigers claim the WS victory.

Surely, it's an obvious sign.

Most player careers follow and arc that peaks between 27-30 and since most Tigers are still climbing that, there is good reason to be optimistic.

Jung - probably could have used more time at AAA. Definitely an open question there.

Dingler - definitely hard to be optimistic about the bat based on what he has shown so far.

Torkelson - still has days when he does look lost, but his OPS since his call up is 781 and his

defense has taken a big step forward. Still cautiously optimistic.

Meadows - don't know if he's ever going to hit for much average but he has huge power that we will probably see more of as he matures. You can live with a 750 OPS CF who plays GG defense.

the players on any team can regress or get hurt from year to year. I don't think the Tigers' chances of this team regressing are particularly worse than any other, but that's why they'll play the games next season. :classic_wink:

I'm old enough to remember when this team would lose the game before an off day.

I read somewhere that if you replace your coffee with tea you can remove up to 93% of whatever joy is left in your miserable life.

Nice area.

Yes, although I got the exact seat numbers: 14 and 15. The up side is that I will be more in line with looking down the third base line, which I like. The down side is that they are the two seats right on the aisle, and it’s a low row, so I’m anticipating a steady stream of ants-in-the-pants people going up and down and continually blocking my view of anything to the right of the plate, including the pitcher. Hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think I am.

Ilitch spent big on Javier Baez, well over $100 million, so there’s precedent for spending on players.

Ilitch has also spent big on baseball infrastructure, which was badly dilapidated. Coaching, development, data science and technology, top talent in all back office and on-field facets, things like that. It’s the kind of boring but necessary investment that pay dividends by allowing us to be competitive using our newfound abilities without having to throw hundreds of millions at players to cover the holes in the system.

So why hasn’t Ilitch been spending on both infrastructure and players? Two reasons related to each other that I can think of: (1) We haven’t been at the stage of development where a top free agent puts us over the top. We’ve been a 70-75-win team, and spending $200 million on the shiniest object on the free agent market would not even get us to .500 in that scenario, which would make everyone, including you, unhappy; and (2) players who can command $200 million have the luxury of bypassing a 70-75-win team in flyover land and focusing on 90+-win teams in the very top markets, which is why they called it agency.

I’m not sold at all on going after Bergman. I don’t think of him as the last piece of the puzzle.

Since, they are an 86-win team entering the second round of the playoffs, I think one player could very well be the last piece of the puzzle.  I think Bergman is currently a great fit for the Tigers.  How long he will be a great fit (and how many years it will take to sign him) is the question.

If you do this, you’re walking away from Jace Jung.  There is no other obvious spot for him.  Now, if Bergman could go back to SS, that would make a big difference, but I doubt he’d have the range to be effective.

I’d prefer we focus on upgrading 1B and make a run at Alonso.

I am not confident that Jung is any better than Torkelson, but Alonso is another player I wouldn't mind seeing them pursue.  And if Jung is better that Torkelson, they could put Bregman at third and try Jung at first.
