slothfacekilla
Hey we are better than Nashville at least lol. Kasper looked good, keep him up even when Motte is healthy. They need someone with his legs on the forecheck. I also cannot stand Gustafsson. He sucks!

gehringer_2
really thought this one was over after Nashville tied it. Early in the 3rd it looked like the Wings were skating in molasses, Preds beating them to every loose puck. But it looked like the Preds overextended themselves and by the 10 min mark Nashville was losing the initiative. Seider being a big physical presence on the ice=good. Seider in the box=bad. Something he needs to watch. Edited October 19 by gehringer_2

The Wings take fewer 'nuisance' shots on goal than many teams. That said, no doubt they were on their heels pretty badly for about a quarter of that game. Something he needs to watch. seider has taken a step forward this year. he's regained his physical nature and he's taking a lot more offensive initiative. he's bringing the puck into the o zone and not just dumping it in. edvinsson and seider can hopefully grow into a physical defensive pairing. gehringer_2
So left over question: when Edvinsson scored the empty netter, he apparently skated back to our net. For some reason Redmond thought something about that was really funny and he tried to get them to cue some video of it but they never got it and Mickey never explained himself. What was the joke? lordstanley
Ok, after this story in The Athletic I'm even more confused about the Walman situation. Walman seems to have been surprised and disappointed the Wings traded him. Talks about an injury that hampered him the last 15 games of the season. Did the coaches think he was faking it or dogging it? I sense some conflict between him and Lalonde. The Wings aren't icing six defenseman better than him right now. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5847866/2024/10/21/red-wings-jake-walman-trade-sharks/ The call began with normal pleasantries, Walman said. Yzerman asked where Walman was, and about his summer. Then he delivered the news: Yzerman had traded Walman to the San Jose Sharks. “I was just like shocked, heartbroken,” Walman said. “Thought that I was going to be there for a long time.” -------------------------- “I just thought I’d built such a strong foundation in Detroit, not just with the team but in Detroit,” Walman said. “My heart was there, you know? I wanted to bring that success and passion to Detroit. It was my first time, like I’ve said to you before, that I felt like I was in a place that loved me, and I loved that place. It was my first time feeling comfortable in a city. That was it, kind of just over in a flash, like that.” -------------------------- And then there was the way the season ended, with Walman playing just two of Detroit’s final 14 games as the team pushed to make the playoffs. During that time, Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde referred to Walman as “not completely himself,” a vague answer that some fans found frustrating about an important piece missing key games. “I love Derek, and I think the coaches there were great with me,” Walman said. “But I just wish that situation was handled different.” --------------------------- “I guess I can tell you now: I was injured,” he said. “I was pretty badly injured, and I was doing everything I could to play through it. He said the injury “wasn’t like a broken bone where you can obviously see there’s something wrong. It was how I felt, like day-to-day, and just little things would piss it off.” ---------------------------- But he said he felt it was important to explain because “I would do anything for the Red Wings, and especially last year.” “I felt loved by the city, I felt loved by the coaches, I felt loved by the players,” he said. “Everybody at the rink, it was just a joy, like always, to come to the rink. And stuff like that happens, injuries happen.----- ----------------------------- After the season, Walman had what he called “a really honest conversation” with Yzerman. He said he shared “probably way more than I should have said about how I was feeling about everything,” including that “I should have gone up and said like, ‘Put me in. I’ve been here, I want to f—ing compete, I feel that I can give this team the best chance to win.'” He said he felt the meeting ended “really good,” and the end notes were standard fare: “Go back, have a good summer, heal my injury. That was the biggest thing: healing.” ------------------------------------------------- Edited October 22 by lordstanley

FWIW, when asked about trading Walman Yzerman said it was just about the money. https://www.facebook.com/BradGalliTV/videos/steve-yzerman-explains-why-he-traded-jake-walman/494119649681023/ Edited October 22 by gehringer_2

Given the state of the Wings' defense, if you need to dump a $3.4mm/yr contract with 2 years left on it of a guy who is at worst your #3 defenseman, you've screwed up. slothfacekilla
Go to 4:15 in this video, I think it is fairly obvious he's referencing Walman: Last season when they were on their big losing skid without Larkin and on the road in Florida he posted an Instagram from the beach saying he was on vacation and deleted it pretty quickly. It seems like he wasn't taking things seriously and it rubbed people the wrong way. I doubt Yzerman would ever come out and explicitly say that he was a problem but it feels kinda easy to read between the lines with everything. buddha
walman went from being underrated to very overrated very quickly. he was a good offenaive defenseman who was a liability on defense, was not physical, and could be pushed around. go back to the ottawa debacle and you'll see them target him every time. and he folded. couple that with the behind the scenes rumors about his attitude and i see why they moved him. and the fact that they had to attach a pick to it tells you what they league really thought about him. he's not on a bad deal, but they couldnt move him, and the only team that took him was the worst team in the league. What I remember most with Walman was that when he first got here, Redmond couldn't stop talking about what a great skater he was, but after that build up I was pretty underwhelmed with what we got. I'll grant he had above average wheels but Mickey made it sound like we were going to be seeing the next Paul Coffey. But I can also believe there may have been questions about his motivation - he wasn't always the most consistent player.

If he had shown the kind of wheels Mickey implied we would see, he could have gotten away with being less physical, but as I noted, I never thought his skating rose quite to that level. lordstanley
I’m not saying Walman was a long term answer. But what is Yzerman’s plan to improve the defense? Walman was better than some of who we are still stuck with. And Ghostisbehere’s 56 points aren’t worth to the Wings the $3.2mm Carolina gave him? (not to mention copp and compher but those were signed for other reasons). there's your money savings to pay for ghost.
