Red Wings 2024 October Game Thread

Recommended Posts

This game was an object lesson on what the Wings offense has to work on. Devils players moving constantly without the puck, someone is always open to take a pass.

On the other side, the Wings still can't close out on anyone in their own zone. They constantly look down a man at even strength.

I'll never complain about a win but getting outshot 2 to 1 is a bit concerning. Nice win....Kane is a sniper.

I am far from endorsing it but we just have to get used to this with Lalonde and this roster.  It seems like the system is designed to grind it out as long as possible until they can get high danger scoring chances versus putting a lot of shots on net to create chances that way.  The fact that the roster doesn't have much high end skill means they won't generate much outside of what's designed, so when the Wings win I think it'll be like this until the roster changes.

I thought Raymond played a decent game tonight - did a lot of hard work on boards.

doing what?  icing the puck?  lobbing it up the boards to center ice?

the entire wings front line did almost nothing all game.  they got lucky that markstrom was off his game and they have Kane.  nobody other than kane is creating much of anything.

watching the devils possess the puck, pass, move, forecheck and shoot and then watching the wings desperately try to corral the puck and then dump it to center ice over and over and over is like watching them two or three years ago.

to someone's earlier point, what was the point of re-signing veleno?  what does he do that kasper doesnt?

true.

the real worrying thing is that other than ASP they dont seem to have a high end offensive skill player in the entire system.  not unless raymond suddenly turns into the guy he was at the end of last year.

I know he isn't your prototypical high end guy that is dancing around people, but I do think Michael Brandsegg-Nygård at least has injected some offensive skill into their prospect ranks.  His shot is going to play in the NHL and he looks like a beast on the forecheck who likes to hit.  I think that skill set will play well in the current NHL on the offensive side because his shot is so good.

Other than that it is a lot of projection so I can't disagree with you.  They have guys like Plante's playmaking ability that could translate but other than that, not much.  I do think Raymond will pick it up again, I expect him to be more like the player last year than what he's shown so far.

Well, shots on goal mean much less than quality scoring chances. Having excellent goaltending even it out, I guess. But I agree, there are times when it looks like we're on an extended penalty kill.

This is funny because I had thought that is exactly why they soured on Blashill - they were playing so basic/safe a style that they couldn't produce, and when Lalonde got here I remember posting that I though they were playing a better possession  up tempo style, but you hit it on the head - they are playing so conservative north/south again that they refuse to reverse the puck to hold possession - they won't risk going cross ice in their own zone so their outlets are always bottled up on the boards or dump and chase and they don't have the speed for that on the secondary lines. Nor does it help that ~80% of Petry's clearing attempts are directly to the other team and 90% of Veleno's rushes also end in possession change. Those two guy alone give the puck back enough times to kill production.

So either Lalonde thinks he has a worse roster than 2 yrs ago or he's turned into Blashill. But it's the passivity  - mostly by Wing forwards when on D in their own zone that really drives me crazy - either pressure the puck in your own zone or go get some players that can and coach that will coach it.

OK - so all that said, it's early. Maybe they are going to look better against different competition - the Rangers may make a lot of teams look bad, and maybe the Devils are going to have a good season.....maybe.

the devils are weird.  they just gave up 8 goals, and 6 to the caps, and then 5 in this game after dominating possession and scoring chances.

i really dislike new jersey because the league gifted them multiple top picks and screwed the wings.
