Smith seems like the best fit.

That site also has a Miles Garrett rumor to the Lions for major draft stock. I don't see Brad giving up so much but...we'll see;

(It doesn't make sense.)

Garrett Trade Proposal to Detroit Lions

In a proposed trade from Alex Kay of Bleacher Report, the Cleveland Browns would send Garrett to the Detroit Lions for a big package.

"Browns would get: 2025 first-round pick, 2026 first-round pick, conditional 2026 third-round pick that would become a 2026 first-round pick if the Lions reach the Super Bowl."

The Lions don't have two first round picks in 2026, so it's literally an impossible trade.  I'm sure the Browns would love to get three first round picks for Garrett.

Yeah, that's why I said it doesn't make sense. I thought it was a typo. Maybe it meant a 1st round pick and a 3rd rounder that would move up if we made the SB?

From a fan standpoint, it would be great to have Crosby or Garrett.  They are an actual replacement for Hutch and some might think are actually better.  It looks like Hutch will make a full recovery although this also gives you some insurance if he comes back and isn't the same player.  Also the thought of either on the other side of (fully recovered) Hutch is a dream for next year.  That being said, I am not sure if they are available and the cost to get them is going to be ridiculous.  You also have to consider, does this mean we can't sign someone like a Branch or Laporta in the future.  That is where I think a player like Hendrickson or Smith come in.  There are other players like Landry or Ojulari that are even in the next tier.  They are not going to be cheap but the draft picks its going to take to get either of those players compared to the others should be significantly less.  These are also players that will not impede on signing other players.   You also could possibly go and add more depth at LB and other positions.  I wonder if there is a player that we all don't think is available or haven't been talked about much, like Joey Bosa or Mack, and surprises us all.  I heard someone mention that this could be similar to the draft and everyone you want or everyone is talking about, the team doesn't like or doesn't think they are a good fit.  Then you have another player, that no one was even discussing pops up and we go and get.

For the record, I'd be fine with Za'Darius Smith and think we could get him for a mid/late round pick. That said, Hendrickson has been and is the guy I want most. I think you're getting a high end talent, with a high motor, good football instincts, and a love for the game. A guy who has played with this coaching staff in New Orleans and someone there familiar with. A guy who is a perfect scheme fit to replace Hutch this season. A guy who played alongside Reader and has familiarity with him from their time with the Bengals.

Best of all though, given that he'll turn 30 this year, I think he provides us with the best trade value. With guys like Crosby or Garrett you're likely surrendering multiple first round picks. With Hendrickson, I can't imagine having to give up more than next year's first rounder. Maybe you have to throw in an extra mid or late round pick in the deal to Cincinnati, but I'd doubt much more than that. Hendrickson being 30 this season is a big plus in this deal for as getting the best value out of it. He's a "superstar" player, easily capable of being a #1 DE/Edge guy and being our primary pass rusher off the end. And if you can get him a new contract to keep him for the next 2-3 years, you could have far and away the best D-Line in the league with Hutch, Hendrickson, McNeil, Reader, and Levi.

Trey Hendrickson is the new Chase Young. Although unlike Chase, Hendrickson has been highly productive throughout most of his career. He isn't just potential and what could be, he has the proven stat line to back it up.

From The Herd with Colin Cowherd show . . .

The Athletic's Dianna Russini joined "The Herd With Colin Cowherd" late last week and was asked about Detroit's plans at defensive end. She started by mentioning a particular player who lands as a trade target.

"Look, in terms of Detroit, I do think they're going to make calls. I do. I think they're going to call the Bengals, maybe see if Trey Hendrickson is a possibility for them. For right now, I think they're patching it up just to get through this (Minnesota Vikings) game. But I do expect them to pick up the phone. I don't think Haason Reddick is someone that fits what they're about and what they want to do."

It was funny seeing so many Lions fans, and some media, losing their minds over Dan Campbell's sly smile at the presser yesterday when asked about the Lions maybe making a trade as if something is imminent. Coach is a first class troll, he loves trolling the media and a lot of people bought it hook, line and sinker.

Personally, I think there's a strong possibility that the Lions do nothing. They're not going to spend big so that rules out the top guys and just about every other team has better draft ammo than the Lions because the Lions are too good and their picks are near the end of round picks, not to mention that they don't have their 3rd. Holmes will not get into a bidding war IMO so I think it's quite possible that they just stick with their guys and see where it takes them. I don't agree with that strategy but I'll just put my trust in the guys that engineered one of the greatest turnarounds in sports history.

I would be very surprised if the Lions did nothing at the trade deadline.  They have just suffered to many injuries at this position and LB.  It might not be a tier 1 or 2 but they are going to make a trade.  I know a lot of people think Holmes doesn't like to trade because they didn't make a trade at last years trade deadline.  They are in a lot different situation this year than last.  1rst they have a clear need and its not because of play but because of injuries (more than one that are done for the season) at the position.  I actually think they will make more than 1 big trade and could be more smaller ones.

Can't rule anything out but Holmes and Campbell for that matter come across as men who are very strong in their convictions and they are guys who put a ton of value in the guys currently in the room and the belief that culture and homegrown talent will carry them forward so I can't see Holmes deviating off the long term plan by spending big for a shorter term fix.

If they do something, I think it'll be more moves like the guys they plucked off the practice squad or a 6th/7th rounder for depth. Can't see Holmes getting into a bidding war for the more significant edges and that includes 2nd tier guys like Za'Darius Smith/Landry etc.

I think the take is true but if so not sure why Campbell was clowning around at the presser. Maybe for once a joke that isn't landing.

Fresh from SI:

However, Campbell clarified that he did not mean anything by his comments on Monday during his weekly radio appearance.

"Yeah, well, no. (Detroit Free Press beat writer) Dave (Birkett) asked me a question and I answer it, and then he wouldn't take that answer," Campbell said. "So I just jumped up and down with the same answer. That's literally all that was. Yeah, you guys are wasting energy."

Campbell once again reiterated that the Lions are searching for the right fit in a potential trade and that general manager Brad Holmes continues to scour the market of available players.

I too think there is a good chance that the Lions do NOT make a big splash. In fact... you know that one vote in the poll saying the Lions won't make a trade? Yeah... that's me.

That said, I do have the feeling that this might be a "what if?" year for the Lions if they don't trade. That's not to say that the Lions can't or won't win it all without bringing in a big name rusher. It also doesn't mean that if they DO bring in a big name rusher that they will win it all. But if they don't bring anyone in and they fall short... I think a lot of people will wonder: "What if?"

I can only remember one other "what if" season in my time as a Lions fan: 1999: What if Sanders had not retired unexpectedly before that year? The Lions were off to a 6-2 start and had just beat the eventual SB winner St. Louis Rams. Of course Batch got hurt in that game and the wheels fell off the wagon. The Lions finished 2-6 and lost their playoff game in Washington. I always wonder: What if Sanders had stayed for one more year? What if Batch hadn't cracked his ribs? Might we have gone somewhere that year??

I'll really hate to look back at 2024 and wonder: "What if we'd picked up a little help?"

Exactly. It makes the trade of future draft pick(s) easier to think about. Say we keep next year's #1 pick? It will probably be a pick in the high 20's or so. Take an edge rusher at that spot and hope he develops into a good to above average rusher. Or just trade that pick, maybe along with another, to get an established edge rusher for this season. Yes, that player would be more expensive and not under team control for as long but we wouldn't have to play the "what if" game. This week in Green Bay may really expose our weak pass rush. It needs to be dealt with and not by practice squad players. We need a legitimate pass rusher (or 2?).

Remember when everyone was complaining that Holmes was sitting out free agency and he waited until CJGJ fell into his lap on a one year deal for peanuts? Yes, he got injured and it didn’t work out, but Holmes did not bid against himself, even when the fans and media were calling for him to.

Remember when everyone was complaining that he didn’t re-sign Jamaal Williams? Then he went out and signed David Montgomery for basically the same money (was it less?) and Montgomery ended up being the far superior player?

Holmes is not going to build his team by trading away multiple draft picks for players whose teams aren’t going to trade them anyway. Crosby isn’t coming here. Garrett isn’t coming here. Hendrickson isn’t coming here. But he is on the phone to half a dozen teams gauging the market. They won’t make a deal that helps them at GB but I expect they will get someone at the deadline.

I expect everyone else in our division to make a trade to add a player before the deadline.   If the Lions don’t make a move for Crosby, Garrett, or Hendrickson, I would not be surprised to see at least one end up in either Chicago, Minnesota, or GB.    I’ll be completely shocked if Ryan Poles doesn’t give up the farm to make a big deadline deal.

What Chicago needs more than anything is a decent coaching staff.

Can you imagine a player getting coached by Dan Campbell taunting the crowd DURING A PLAY!?!

Incidentally, I heard Mike Florio say he talked to Kalif Raymond after the game, and asked about the team’s success this year. Raymond said that ARSB insists on perfection on the practice field. Winning culture from front office to players.

I saw an interview with Raymond after his huge game. He deflected credit over and over to different squads on the team as well as the coaches. The guy is a true team player. I can see why MCDC loves him.
