First point is that I don't actually believe you when you say you aren't looking at it from a political side.... the entire issue is political. Secondly, when you cast ballots for politicians who have a history of being hostile toward Title IX, it's very hard for me to take the histrionics and the claims of concern for female athletes seriously.... To be clear, I do think there are questions about how to navigate the issue of transgendered participation in sports and recognize that it isn't fully settled, but it's hard for me to look at any of this outside of this larger context. The GOP has historically had very tepid, if not hostile, views toward female athletes and accommodations for them, I'm not going to pretend otherwise because of this latest moral panic about trans athletes. 1 Quote
Tigeraholic1 Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 I really do not care about the political side on this. Call me a liar all you want. I will disengage from the conversation entirely, happy new year.... Quote
mtutiger Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 I don't think you're a liar, but I think you are convinced that this issue isn't political when it clearly is. Quote

It's not even exclusive to conservatives, honestly, but this is a prime example. My point here is that while there are questions that arise from transgender participation in sports, we are talking about an infinitesimal amount of cases (Sue ran the math above), and the people doing the crowing have generally been hostile to the idea of women's sports or equal protection for women athletes to date. There is very little reason to trust their motivations. What makes today’s self-professed conservatives different is that they assume bad intent by people on their other side of their chosen divide who are in charge of the stuff they don’t understand, even if they have demonstrated no history of nefariousness; while excusing bad intent that is said out loud in the public square by people they hope will take charge of the stuff they don’t understand in order to dismantle the very structure of governance, and who have a track record of bad actions a mile long. gehringer_2 Posted January 1 Posted January 1 (edited) there has always been that contradiction at the heart of populism: The levers of government cannot be fixed by any means. Give me power and I will fix the levers of government. Nonsensical when simplified to its core. But that's because what we are seeing here is also a culture suffused in the Superman myth. The leader can do it because he is special. Ironic that in an age when it's almost impossible for any public figure to escape being show to have feet of clay, the public clamors all the more the mythical Hero. But look at film as a reflection of popular culture in this regard - what do we see but super-hero movies? We've given up on the idea that normal people working together can solve problems and are reinforcing that idea to ourselves everyday. We used to see Mr Smith goes to Washington, now we wait for Thor to save us from Armageddon. The stories a society tells itself matter and the ones we are telling ourselves are not the ones likely to inspire us to get off our own asses and fix it. Edited January 1 by gehringer_2 Quote

Almost as good as when Trump honored that pill popping, misogynistic, racist Rush Limbaugh with the medal of freedom. Honoring a bigot like Limbaugh with the medal of freedom is bad itself. I don't think Hillary or Soros should have been honored in this way by Biden. I've made disdain for the Clintons well known and will continue to. Edited January 9 by Mr.TaterSalad 1 Quote
