2016 was a combination of 8 years of Democratic control of the White House, hatred of Hillary Clinton for a number of reasons (including sexism), Clinton's ineptness on the campaign trail, over confidence among the average mainline Democratic voter, and a large dose of "I hate all the candidates" (which probably played a role in 2024 as well). There are still a large group of people in this country who will not vote for a woman or a person of color.

Trump is a special circumstance. He played a role on TV that people bought into and many went no deeper than that.

The flip side of this, though, goes back to the discussion about Trump's historically low approval rating for an incoming President (mirroring his first term), despite the relatively favorable media coverage and obseqious toadying by the Elon's and Bezos's and Zuck's of the world: 

Trump's secret sauce for winning the election wasn't any special love for Trump or the American people thinking he's a genius or loving everything about his platform: it's that the American people wanted to punish the current administration.

I'll let history sort our Biden's place in the rankings, but his approval rating leaving office kinda makes Trump's win (~200k votes across 3 states) seem even less impressive in retrospect.

I'll probably invite fire from both sides on this, but the absolute worst people to talk to about "the other side" are people on the other end of the spectrum from that other side. (and yes, that goes both ways)

In terms of 2020, Biden did an effective job of consolidating a large number of groups to vote, including those on the left. But a lot of that was out of sheer pragmatism and the fact that Trump himself was an unpopular figure at the time of the 2020 election who was seen to have botched the ongoing pandemic at that time.

Biden did a lot of stuff during his term to try to placate the left, but acting like he was a creature of that wing of the D Party or that he was beloved by that wing, that's just not reality.
