lordstanley Posted December 13, 2024 Author Posted December 13, 2024 Late hope. Chiarot scores with 4 minutes to go, Gustaffson almost ties it seconds later. 2-1 Philly with 2:35 to go. Quote
lordstanley Posted December 13, 2024 Author Posted December 13, 2024 Philly's first shot in 13 minutes is an empty netter with a minute to go to ice it. Quote

First 50 games of the season last year the Wings were better than just puck luck. They were competitive in most games and earned their record. The goaltending was good but not THAT good. This year is different. Their goaltending from Talbot’s is as good as last year’s but the Wings are being outplayed in 75% of the games. If anything, their bad record flatters them. Quote

lordstanley Posted December 13, 2024 Author Posted December 13, 2024 (edited) I just checked and after picking up 72 points in 59 season to start last season, the Wings finished 8-12-3 for 19 points in their final 23 games. They’ve started this year with 26 points in 29 games. So 45 points in past 52 games (that would be a 71 pt season). Yeah, a bottom 5 finish this year is now as likely as not, IMO. Shinzaki Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 This team needs major surgery beyond the five really good players and Kasper.. who shows potential. So much dead wood. Really expected more from Ras and Veleno. Hoped for more from Kane and Tarasenko Really starting to question keeping Stevie ...Newsey should be gone now Quote

Hoped for more from Kane and Tarasenko Really starting to question keeping Stevie ...Newsey should be gone now I think most neutral NHL observers had confidence in Yzerman until the summer before last. It’s not hindsight. All those signings like Compher, Copp, Chiarot and Holl have turned out exactly like critics at the time predicted. Most fans and media closer to the Wings defended Yzerman the summer before last. He knows what he is doing, these players are just stopgaps, they won’t tie our hands, the Wings are making slow and steady progress, etc. The playoff race, which ended a point short, was an overall neutral. Didn’t vindicate Yzerman but didn’t hurt him either. But another lacklustre at best offseason and a poor start to this season makes Wings fans and media doubt Yzerman, has exposed that there may be no real “plan” in the Yzerplan. I think Illitch will be the last to reach his breaking point with Yzerman. Yzerman has AT LEAST until the end of next season, IMO, before his job is in the least bit of jeopardy, likely another year after that. Edited December 13, 2024 by lordstanley Quote

buddha Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 i have a number of direct reports in the philly area who despite my best efforts are flyers fans. one of them went to the game last night and said the wings were just dead. small, and not physical. pushed around. lackadaisacal. imo that's a recipe to fire the coach. weve all said we know about the roster although we have different opinions on why. i give yzerman more benefit of the doubt than others because i see the organization he took over as one of the worst of all time. with that said, its hard to argue with results. and the results of copp, compher, chairot, holl, gustaffson, tarasenko, dealing walman, not re-signing perron (which i thought was smart), dealing maata, etc have resulted in a terrible, talentless roster. i still put the majority of blame for that on kenny holland and zadina, veleno, cholowski, and rasmussen. those guys should be the foundation right now and - as we know - they are either out of the league or not very good. regardless, this season is a waste. trade off anything that isnt young and move forward. and hope against hope for some lottery luck. gehringer_2 Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 (edited) For starters they should not have re-signed Kane with Debrincat already on the team and Berggren being the next call-up. It was an add of something they already had way too much of - small forwards who don't play 200 ft and the money should have been used on something else. Not to mention that Kane isn't even Kane this season - 36 was apparently his 'sell by'. And whoever recommended Motte needs to sent to Medicine Hat on a one way ticket. We all know the wings are too small and play crappy D and Yzerman keeps deciding that more of that is somehow the answer. And at $6.25M Petry is also stealing their money every night. A terrible acquisition at his price and age. Those two alone are depressing sucking up $10M in cap - it reeks of a FO unable to find talent trying to gnaw the bones of old familiar players, more out of misplaced hope than FO acumen. I absolutely hate to see a team bringing in other teams' old discards. Never a winning formula. Edited December 14, 2024 by gehringer_2 Quote

I agree with your post, but one point of clarification. My understanding is that the Wings are only paying 37% of Petry's $6.25mm contract, or $2.3mm/yr. Habs and Penguins are picking up the rest. 1 Quote

Never a winning formula. is the real reason they've failed so badly is that he no longer has the same people surrounding him as he had in tampa? they brought all the old red wings back to be in management now and its quite possible that while they were great players, they arent very good at scouting. Hongbit Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 I wonder how the team is doing in the Google parallel universe where Kenny took Quinn Hughes instead of Zadina in his last draft here. Quote
Shinzaki Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 Or Gabe Vilardi...Martin Necas or Nick Suzuki instead of Rasmussen in 2017 Quote

Hell, even Evan Bouchard instead would have been fine and I think that was the original plan until Zadina dropped into their lap. Speaking of that draft, I see Oliver Wahlstrom, drafted #11 overall, was finally waived by NYI yesterday. He was a big name at the time. Quote
lordstanley Posted December 15, 2024 Author Posted December 15, 2024 Wings looking pretty good. Lead Leafs 1-0. Waved off goal was a nice bonus. Quote
