You just had to call a timeout there.  The 40 secs was just too valuable.  Campbell has had a bad day.

No. You score without calling a timeout, you onside kick, and if you don’t get it back, you use them on the hopeful three-and-out.

Otherwise you’re required to recover the onside kick.

That’s asking a lot.  That means you have to score in at least 60 secs without using a TD to give yourself a real chance.   If that’s the case then make it even more challenging. Score a TD before the 2 min warning. In this case the time was more valuable.

It is asking a lot, but you’re down 10 (soon to be 13) with 2:45 left. It’s going to take a lot.

Which is why you need the 40 secs and not one timeout. It was the wrong call.

Not taking the timeout earlier made this impossible. It was wrong in the moment and proved to be worse after the fact.  There should be 1:05 left with 2 timeouts. You were always going to need an onside kick.  The 3 timeouts wasn’t the added value. Campbell has to learn from this.

1:05 and two timeouts is game over.

No.  You had to get an onside kick either way. You weren’t stopping Buffalo. The timeouts didn’t matter.

Meh, win the last 3 and you get the #1 seed.

I think a game like this might actually be good for the Lions, first real adversity of the season on the field (not including injuries) so this could be a launching point for them to correct mistakes and perhaps get humbled.

They were humbled against Chicago and that didn’t really help.
