No game until Thursday is the perfect time to discus Beasley and his contract.  A few things to know:

  • He is not eligible for an extension
  • The Pistons do not have his Bird rights.  So they must use pure cap space to sign him again.  There is no going over the cap to keep him.
  • The Pistons do not have his early Bird rights.  EBR let you go over the cap in a more limited manner than normal Bird rights.  But they don't have these either.

The blue highlighted cells are cap holds.  They are something required for free agents.  Once the Pistons renounce THJ they will get that $24M cap space back.  But until they do they are sitting at $171M next year on a projected cap of $154.6M.

So with THJ they are roughly $17M over the cap.  They can renounce his free agent rights and get that $24M in cap space back.  That would leave them at $7.2M in cap space.  So they could give Beasley his cap hold ($7.2M) + the $7.2 in cap space they also have.  So the most they can give Beasley is $14.4M next year.  Anything over that they cant sign him without dumping some salary.

These numbers are always off a bit.  So this is just ballpark stuff.

Now for the Cade situation.

His next extension kicks in next year.  Current $$$ on that is $38.6M.  If he wins MVP (He wont) or is named all NBA that number jumps to $46.3M.

I doubt he makes all NBA, but its not crazy to think about if he keeps up his play.  If he does, that eats up even more cap space.  Just something to consider.

If you doubt Cade could make all NBA.  Hali made third team last year at 20 ppg 10.9 apg and 3.9 rpg while shooting 36% from three.

Cade is averaging 23.9 ppg 9.4 apg and 7.3 apg while shooting 39% from three.

****, maybe he will make it.

Are Reed and Moore guaranteed contracts?

One site says Moore is a team option next year.  Another says he is a free agent.

One site says if Reed is on the roster on 1/10/25 then his 2025 deal becomes guaranteed.  If true they could waive him before next month and use his space.  The problem there is, you still need a third big.

Interesting. That Reed contract could be a nice toss for a team that just wants to cut him after the trade, provided Detroit is getting a Center back in the deal.

Yeah.  That is a nice chunk of change for a team looking to dump salary.

The site says the same thing happens next year.  If he is on the roster on 1/10/26 then his deal for 2026-27 is guaranteed.  So even if they don't do it this year, they get another shot next year.

The multi-year view on Spotrac is what I'm using.
