Deleterious Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Hollinger says Reed might come back. I didn't think you could sign a player you cut until next season. But I guess you can. Quote The key here is that waiving Reed and signing a minimum contract on Sunday allowed the Pistons to slow their roll toward using too much of their $12 million in cap space before the trade deadline. Reed’s contract chewed up about $45,000 in cap room per day; the newly signed McCoy does so at just under $8,000 a day. Sunday was also the first day that replacing Reed with a pro-rated veteran minimum deal would keep Detroit just above the salary floor. Detroit ended up $1.42 million below the floor after waiving Reed; the pro-rated veteran minimum is $1.44 million. (Note that it’s also possible Detroit could waive McCoy after two days and then re-sign Reed to a minimum deal once he clears waivers; the fact they signed one of their own G Leaguers rather than promoting a two-way player makes me think this is at least somewhat possible.) By operating this way, Detroit heads into the trade deadline with $14 million in cap space rather than the $10 million it had with Reed on the books and still keeps itself above the salary floor. Betrayer Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Sounds like the whole thing was just to free up a little extra cap space going into trade season. I'll judge this move when I see what they do with it. Quote
Deleterious Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 So about the Hollinger tidbit. None of the cap gurus on Twitter have backed his claim. That makes me question how accurate he is about the Reed situation. Quote
Deleterious Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Looks like he was right. This answers one question. Who is the dumbest man on earth? Paul Reed. Every team in the league can give him a vet min contract and this fool signs back here? Quote
Deleterious Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 If I'm a potential trade partner, I value his unguaranteed contract way more than $4M in cap space. Especially since Detroit is the only team in the league currently with cap space. It has diminishing returns. Quote
Deleterious Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 His deal wasn't guaranteed until Jan 10th. Until then, the Pistons could have offered the $10.5 plus the $7.7M his contract was worth. Way more than $14M. The only advantage I see here is it lets them use it past the Jan 10th deadline. Quote

Deleterious Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Thompson with his best half of his season so far. 11 points at the half. Quote
Deleterious Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Wow. No way this should be going to OT. What a collapse by Detroit. Quote
Deleterious Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 3 minutes left in overtime. It's been over 7 minutes since the Pistons have scored a point. Miami's up 120 to 114. Quote

Deleterious Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Hardaway brought them back then instantly tried to lose it. Pistons win. Quote
Deleterious Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 I like Thompson in the starting lineup. When Harris gets back I would love to see Thompson replace Hardaway in the starting lineup. 1 Quote
