Week Seventeen: Detroit Lions (13-2) @ San Francisco 49ers (6-9)

No team has ever gotten into FG range easier.  This is not nfl level defense.   Anyone who says this is simply on the players is lost.  This is scheme.  This is preparation.  These players are not properly coached.

How can anybody have any confidence in this team with this defense? They're bringing a knife to a gunfight with this defense against playoff offenses. Could be a one and done team very easily if the offense isn't picture perfect.

you still think this is a super bowl caliber team?

When you can score like they can you will always have a puncher's chance in the NFL playoffs but they are obviously going to have to play near perfect on offense and just hope once the field gets condensed by the goal line they can hold the other team to a FG atleast a couple of times.

Most these players weren't on active rosters to start the year for a reason.  With that said we are doing a poor job both in coverage and getting pressure so scheme wise they need to make some adjustments at half.

I think they're in trouble next week against Minnesota, let alone in first round of the playoffs.

Several strong contributors, highlighted by Puka Nakua, were selected after Jake Moody in that draft. I just don't understand selecting special teams contributors that early, when you can bring ten UDFA kickers into training camp and likely find a competent kicker in the bunch.

Especially for an aging team that threw away three 1st round picks.

they can beat atlanta and/or washington.  the packers at home is a toss up.  they should be an underdog against any other nfc playoff team.

if we play atlanta we have a shot. that's about it.

they desperately need that bye.  beating minny next week is an imperative if they want to win.  i dont like them on the road againdt any team other than atlanta.

With the defense, my hope is that knowledge of the season situation (even if not consciously) is contributing to the lackluster performance tonight. If your body knows that you have a bigger game in six days, you may only be giving your 80% without even meaning to.

I also do think getting Anzalone back will make a difference, at least in the run game.

you cant expect them to compete when half the defense WASNT EVEN IN THE LEAGUE a week ago.

the fact that they are 13-2 is a testament to the coaching staff and the offense.  the defense isnt an nfl caliber team.

its a dam shame that it has to end this way, but no team can survive what the lions have gone through this year.

Like I said, this defense blows so hard.

the bears - THE BEARS - took a punter in round 4 last year.

The defense on IR would be a top-10 starting unit.

In fairness, they are 7-0 on the road this season. Counterintuitively, the patchwork defense may have an easier time on the road, when the crowd is quiet and they don't have to rely on silent signals.

Agreed. But most people would agree injuries cost us a chance at a Super Bowl. Sometimes it's just an excuse but this time it's a real fact.

you are really searching for silver linings.

i get it, but...come on man.  this is not the same team they've had for a majority of the season.  its not a championship defense.

I agree. This defense went 12 straight quarters without allowing a touchdown earlier this season. Now they can't stop a cold, let alone touchdowns. They're not the same and I'm worried about the next few weeks. But I'm also not throwing in the towel.
