I feel the same way about Jeff Petry. I can see why a conservative coach like Lalonde loved him - he doesn't make many mistakes - but that doesn't do much good if you can't get to the right play in time or if you are there and you can't win the one on one, and that's pretty much where Jeff has been. If Johansson gets sent down, you can only hope Petry turns out to have more in the tank than he was showing under Lalonde. Quote

I guarantee if they tried to send Johansson down he'd get claimed on waivers, I think he's shown enough the last few games that a few teams would take a chance. So hopefully it is Petry in the press box and not him. Quote
Hongbit Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I expect San Jose to break the winning streak tonight because hockey. Quote

gehringer_2 Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Oh the mystery of the maths. If the Wings are basically a 500 team, they have a 50/50 chance of winning tonight, yet the odds of an 8 in a row run for a 500 team are one in 256. Quote
lordstanley Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 Streak in jeopardy. Sharks extend lead to 3-1 in the first minute of the 3rd. Quote
lordstanley Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 Bédard or Celebrini, who will have a better career? Quote
lordstanley Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 Goals everywhere. 5-3 Sharks with under 9 minutes to go. Husso has given up 5 goals on 22 shots. Quote
Motor City Sonics Posted January 15 Posted January 15 How much more time does Cossa need in the minors? Quote

lordstanley Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 I consider the Wings to be back in playoff contention, but their lousy first few months left little margin for error and the remaining schedule will not help. Quote

Yzerman is turning into Kenny Holland in that regard, leaving players in the minors for far too long. Cossa should be up here and Husso should be LTIR'ed and outta here. Quote

lordstanley Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 Per this week's Athletic/NYT piece ranking goalies, of the 32 NHL starting goalies only two are under 26 - Luukonen in Buffalo (25) and Wolf in Calgary (23). Cossa is 22. Not to say there aren't some 1As or backups younger than 26. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6048097/2025/01/13/nhl-goalies-2025-tiers-rankings/ Quote

Unless they truly believe he simply can't handle doing so, what's the argument against playing him 3-5 times a month at this point in his career? Edited January 15 by Mr.TaterSalad Quote

I would imagine the argument is that it is more beneficial for him to get experience being THE guy against pro players every game, including carrying that into the playoffs. Having him sitting for ~9 games a month probably isn't super ideal. Also, they may feel that he still has things to work on in his game. If you're trying to get him to focus on something specifically it probably is better in the AHL where the focus is more on developing rather than the NHL where the games "count". I'm not sure where I land on the debate, it could be beneficial for him to get NHL experience but I also don't watch a ton of Grand Rapids so I couldn't say if he's truly ready. I'm fine with them not rushing him in the end I think. I think next season will be when he makes more NHL starts with Husso and Lyon hitting free agency. Cossa also missed some games down in Grand Rapids recently so he may be getting over an injury. Lyon is also joining the team again, so this Husso start is hopefully just a blip because of the injury. Better to yoyo Husso than Cossa. 1 Quote

I imagine at some point they also want to give Campbell some run at GR to see if he can find 'it' again as he has already shown he can be a decent pro in the past so Husso, Cossa and Campbell makes for a crowded goalie room at GR.
