slothfacekilla Posted January 21 Posted January 21 From what I've read he's been playing really well in GR, forechecking well and throwing the body like we wish Rasmussen would. I hope he keeps it up. Quote

I hoped two years ago that when they put him on the the 'big' line with Sundqvist for that short audition they might have had something if they had given it more time..... I couldn't find a new injury other than that. Someone in the winging it in motown comments said Veleno is hurt but I couldn't find it via Google. I also think Lombardi and Mazur are either back or close to back for Grand Rapids so this creates some lineup room down there too. 1 Quote
lordstanley Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 (edited) No shame in going for 0 for Florida this past weekend, but tonight at Philadelphia is a game the Wings need to win if they are to keep momentum from the coaching change. 1-0 Flyers after 2. Edit: braincramp, it wasn't 0 for Florida. It was losses to Tampa and Dallas, after beating the Panthers last week. Edited January 22 by lordstanley Quote
gehringer_2 Posted January 22 Posted January 22 The story in the DetNews made it sound like Veleno was odd man out but it didn't actually say he had been sent down - I wouldn't have thought they could but I don't track that kind of stuff. At any rate, they said the line would be Soderblom, Rass and Fischer. If Ras is motivated to raise his game that could be tough group to play against - which of course is the point! Quote
lordstanley Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 Chiarot-shaboom! Tie game, now with 11 minutes left in regulation. Quote
lordstanley Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 The last minute of a regulation of a tie game is often played conservatively, but the Wings swarmed and had chances to score. Especially Copp. Off to overtime with the Wings seeking just their 3rd win in their past 23 games in Philadelphia. Quote

lordstanley Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 Happens so often. Kane has chance at one end, but caught up so comes back other way and Philly wins. Quote
Sports_Freak Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Grrrrrr...ot losses are the worst. But at least we got a point. Quote
gehringer_2 Posted January 22 Posted January 22 worst 3 on 3 i've seen the Wings play in long time. And WTF is Tarasenko out there for - he's playing so tentative he's useless. Quote

slothfacekilla Posted January 22 Posted January 22 How did Elmer look? I haven't been able to watch the last like three games... Quote

Didn't see all the game either - about 2/3. Saw at least a few plays where he used his length to break up a rush, he carried the puck with a little success. Didn't get much of a feel for how he played on defense as I hadn't memorized his number and I always find the fox/bally/fanduel production style uses too many tight shots to get get any quick sense for whether all 5 people are where they should be on the ice. I was struck at how much the team as a whole seemed to be back in fall-back mode. Tarasenko in particular. There were multiple times he could have challenged a Flyer for a loose puck at the boards at half ice but just fell back instead. I just don't get that. Maybe you can tie him up and ruin the flow - even if he beats you to the puck and gets a pass off, you've hurried him and can finish your check and take him out of the flow of whatever rush is started. Has to be better than letting him just skate away and organize his offense. The last few year's Wing's teams have done this (well failed to!) more than any hockey team i've ever watched. To me it's the biggest reason they've been bad. They don't/won't compete. Edited January 22 by gehringer_2 1 Quote
buddha Posted January 22 Posted January 22 i only saw parts of the 3rd and overtime, but when elmer was on the ice he looked like he did that last time he was here: big, slow, long, and passive. like g2, i did see him use his reach to poke the puck away a few times but i did not notice him throwing his body around like i would have hoped. but its just one game and i did miss most of it. seider remains in beast mode. he's really gone back to being a physical menace which is good to see. unfortunately the team offense has disappeared again. seems like when kane isnt on a bender the team sort of falls apart. there's no one really outside of larkin/raymond/debrincat who is a capable offensive player for the second line. as kane goes, the team goes. and unlike last year, there is no ghost to score from defense. as has been noted here multiple times gustafson and tarasenko were awful awful signings. they have no replacement for walman/ghost from last year and its killed them other than the period with the new coach bump/kane resurgence. i suspect if they are lucky enough to make the playoffs they will be a very easy out. teams will hunt kane and raymond and brutalize the 3rd pair defense and the wings will be easily swept without big time puck luck. 2 Quote
buddha Posted January 22 Posted January 22 i havent seen anything linking the wings to jt miller and that's a good thing. too old for their timeline and too expensive. Quote
lordstanley Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 Love when the Wings score in dying seconds of period. DeBrincat makes it 2-0 over red hot Habs. I will be in Montreal and expect to see Wild @ Habs on Thursday. 1 Quote
slothfacekilla Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Should be at on of fun to see a game in Montreal! I've caught a little of the game, great to see them up 2-0 Quote
buddha Posted January 24 Posted January 24 raymond is turning into quite the playmaker. he's keeping the puck more, working the boards, and making some pretty slick passes. his pass to debrincat for the second goal was a thing of beauty. 1 Quote
slothfacekilla Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Elmer so close with a goal, couldn't bury it Quote
Sports_Freak Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Remember those back to back games when Montreal beat us? Kick their butts!!! Quote
lordstanley Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 2-goal lead after 2, Wings ahead 4-2. Berggren, DeBrincat, Copp and Larkin with the goals. Quote

Have been to a few games at the old Forum and it was always electric. Late January game in cold, snowy Montreal when the Habs have surged into playoff position? Should be a great atmosphere. My daughter goes to school there, McGill, and went to a game with her boyfriend before Christmas when he visited from Vancouver, so she can show me the ropes at the "new" place (opened 1996 I believe). 2 1 Quote
