Does he get a HUGE handicap for his age. In reality he'd probably deport anyone who beats him.

Somebody wrote a whole book about how he cheats at golf.

I don't really understand the no taxes on tips and no taxes on overtime.  What's so special about those groups?  On the other hand, people in those groups typically don't make a lot of money, so I don't begrudge them their break.  In theory, I do agree with no taxes on social security since they have paid into it all their lives and you can't expect the elderly to work forever.  The problem is I fear they'll use the tax cuts as an excuse to cut the base and they will end up gaining nothing from the tax cut.

If they were to reduce the taxes on SS, I think it should be done in such a way as your marginal tax rate on what you earn on top your SS is still taxed at a rate based on your total income including SS. So if you had 60k SS income and 40K outside income, I would tax the 40K at the rate for 100K income. This would not be the same as just dropping SS from your AGI, which would leave you at a much lower tax rate on your other income which would just be another freebie for upper income people.

It will be worded so bonuses for certain financial sector workers will be "tips". Just like certain salaries are considered long term capital gains.

I had not thought about that, but you are probably correct.

There are other problems with the no tax on tips thing. Why give restaurant waiters a tax break but not restaurant hostesses or back of the restaurant workers? Why do people who deliver food to your house get a tax break but not the people who deliver Amazon packages to your house? Why should blackjack dealers at a casino get a tax break but not the people who clean the floors and bathrooms there? Why should certain occupations be privileged in the tax code at the expense of others, and of the rest of us?

It was probably just an attempt to buy any extra votes from anyone that earn tips and/or overtime, nothing more than that.

Look, he also promised lower prices at the grocery store.  Its not happened yet and its going to go in the opposite direction with these tariffs.

Right, I don't think waiters deserve a tax break more than other service workers.  I am just not going to get upset if it happens because most of them don't make a lot.

I don't think it's fair that overtime workers would get a tax break either since they are already getting time and a half.  It's also true that many salaried workers work extra hours without getting paid anything for the extra hours. It's another case though where I am not going to complain about generally low paid people getting a break.

No doubt.  If I say I don't understand something that Trump does, it's rhetorical!

Well I guess my coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

Which, hey, speaking of tariffs, let's see how that manifests itself in higher costs for Starbucks consumers.  Unless President Spray Tan has lined up coffee bean growing somewheres in the USA, that ought to get attention, right?

More details surface in Trump administration plan to cut national forests

April 4, 2025 at 4:50 pm

By Lynda V. Mapes

Seattle Times environment reporter

A Trump administration memorandum issued Thursday declared a state of emergency in domestic timber supply and national forest health, directing the Forest Service to suspend normal environmental reviews and increase logging on more than 100 million acres of national forest, including in the Pacific Northwest.

The memo from the secretary of agriculture is a first step in implementing President Donald Trump’s March 1 executive order directing cutting of more national forests.

The memo has the effect of declaring nearly 60% of all national forestlands to be in a state of emergency, thereby lifting the usual requirements for public comment and environmental review for protection of endangered species and cultural resources before logging.

If this doesn’t depress, disgust, and infuriate you on some level, turn in your “human card”, because this news absolutely should shake you to your core.

This should come as no surprise.

But, hey, I bet his golf courses have trees on them.  We need lumber?  Start there.
