romad1 Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Coalition of the willing. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9vygkzkkrvo Quote Speaking at a news conference shortly after the meeting of leaders, Starmer said four points had been agreed: to keep military aid flowing into Ukraine, and to keep increasing the economic pressure on Russia that any lasting peace must ensure Ukraine's sovereignty and security and Ukraine must be present at any peace talks in the event of a peace deal, to boost Ukraine's defensive capabilities to deter any future invasion to develop a "coalition of the willing" to defend a deal in Ukraine and to guarantee peace afterwards Sir Keir also announced an additional £1.6bn ($2bn) of UK export finance to buy more than 5,000 air defence missiles. This comes on top of a £2.2bn loan to provide more military aid to Ukraine backed by profits from frozen Russian assets. Its nice when our ally is trying to keep its end of the collective security relationships going. Quote

oblong Posted March 3 Posted March 3 The scary thing is… for all the bluster about a third term… the fact he can’t run again has made him more dangerous. He never cared about people. He doesn’t need votes anymore. He doesn’t need to please the base. Yeah all those potential maga fans who are pissed off… what are they gonna do? Flip congress? The house yea. But then what? You think another impeachment would draw in 20 GOP senators? His approval rating is meaningless in practical terms. Republicans in congress won’t flip on him in a meaningful way. Quote

It is the one unabashedly hyper-patriotic holiday people of practically all political stripes lean into. I’m going to be at the Tigers-Blue Jays game in Dunedin on Saturday. I am eager to see how the Canadian national anthem will be received? I assume it will be overwhelmingly Americans there as a not insignificant number of Canadians have avoided going to the southern U.S. this year for obvious reasons, but even so, I don’t imagine there will be any incidents when the Canadian anthem is played. Either way, I’ll be ready to belt out the words. Quote

On rereading - the sentence was poorly constructed - I was trying to get to the level of uncertainty about everything in the US 3 yrs out vs the long lead times to do something like plan an Olympics somewhere else if the rest of the world wanted to make the statement. I hope France, Italy, and the UK are ramped up enough to fulfill the order, because I’m pretty sure the U.S. is no longer in the arms-sales-to-western-Europe business. Quote

Republicans in congress won’t flip on him in a meaningful way. I’ve been praying for Trump to survive long enough to get through his term and see his party get turned out in droves in a free and fair election in 2028. That’s the hopeful pessimist in me, and if the electoral system manages to hold up until then, that scenario seems like a certainty. Flip side, I’ve been … well, maybe not exactly worried, but at least a little concerned in one of the corners of my mind … that Trump will get to a point while in office that once he understands he’s going to die any day now, he attains Peak Sociopathic Narcissist and decides, “if I can’t live in this world, nobody can”, and pushes The Button before he goes. What, you think the people around him would never go along with that? You mean those wackadoodle super-evangelical Christians who are preparing the way for Christ to come again so He can finally put this sinful world to its prophesied apocalyptic end? As if. This government is lousy up and down the whole system with people who believe in that shǐt. Perhaps the only guy who could stop that is FElon, and for any number of reasons, he might not even be around by then. That’s the Mr. Alarmist Non-sense in me. Go ahead, tell me that’s 100% impossible. Then tell me why. Quote
oblong Posted Monday at 03:59 PM Posted Monday at 03:59 PM I won't tell you it's impossible. The way his wacko cabinet was just rubber stamped tells me there's no courage among today's GOP. I envision scenarios like the FBI and even the military trying to seize ballot boxes. A showdown between a state national guard and our military with him trying to nationalize one or more of them. Military firing on protesters. Assassination attempts on leading dem leaders, with pardons to follow. You are right, the evangelical supporters of his see this all as the prophecy so yeah.... they're on board totally. Quote

romad1 Posted Monday at 07:54 PM Posted Monday at 07:54 PM Hegseth is a run of the mill asshole who loves him some confederate generals. I never liked naming things after principles or concepts not people. We have this issue in northern Virginia with the renaming of a lot of high schools things like Liberty HS. Just gack. An inadequate handling of history leads to terrible outcomes. Quote
