ewsieg Posted Tuesday at 03:43 PM Posted Tuesday at 03:43 PM I feel like I seek out and consume more news than most. I also think most of you on this board are above average consumers as well. So with that, can anyone tell me exactly what Canada and Mexico were supposed to do in order to avoid the Tariffs. I understand that he feels the USMCA is a stupid deal and only a stupid person would sign it, and I agree with the latter portion, but I have not heard any specifics on what he was hoping to accomplish by threatening tariffs. He says he wants those jobs moved to America, but he’s either too dumb to realize you can’t just wave a wand and have that done, or he knows this and just feels like he’s a tough guy for doing so. At the expense of the American people that are going to suffer greatly. Quote

Aside from the pure ego thing, which is probably at least 50% of everything he does, to the degree he actually has any thoughts on political economy, he has a long standing belief that US manufacturing has collapsed because of 'unfair trade deals', instead of the real reason, which is the US government's failure to provide a positive manufacturing environment in its now 4 decade long windmill tilt to become a "knowledge and finance" based economy. I certainly expect that's what he wanted, but generally Trump would say something stupid but his admin would then follow up with some specifics. In this case, I've seen Canada/Mexico response that this wouldn't be good, but nothing even from them on what they were asked to do. I specifically just searched and see that several days ago, Mexico offered up a proposal to put a tariff on Chinese goods and for Canada to follow suit. Bessent said it would be a 'nice gesture' but no other details. So Trump is essentially making Mexico and Canada guess on what they can do, rather then the US sitting down to explain their concerns?!?!? I know the daily crap Trump does is news worthy, but the full story on this needs to be pushed by the media so everyone knows just how stupid this action is, so when the economic pain hits, the right people are blamed. I disagree. I think we're headed for 1970s style stagflation potentially. A situation where Trumpflation and higher prices are created because of his tariffs, trade wars with other trading partners, and economy volatility. Then, intermixed with that, you will have a recession because of the economic pressures put on businesses by the Trumpflation, trade wars, and overall day-to-day volatility and uncertainty of his policies. I don't think there's anything they could have said or done to stop this.... in part, Trump was boxed in by his previous posture on tariffs. You cannot keep making these threats over and over and over again and come out looking strong if you never eventually follow through on them. But also there was nothing they could offer him because the threats, in and of themselves, are all nonsensical and aren't really tied to any actual concrete outcomes. The man just wants to do tariffs and think's they're great for all of us.... he's high on his own supply. Quote
