It'd never happen, but just throw the question at him, see how he mumbles in response to that. Quote

And have expectation that the congenital obsession with tariffs will cause prices will rise I would be pleasantly surprised if that were the case. I wouldn't think most 'Muricans would understand additional tariffs are ultimately going to the consumer. We use steel and aluminum in our processes. We've already been advised that as production materials rise due to the tariffs, the additional expense that we incur is going to the customer. And no doubt that will also be passed to their customer, etc, etc. Quote
casimir Posted March 13 Posted March 13 So, an acquaintance was going on and on about the election a couple of months ago. Somehow or another he thought he could partially substantiate his voting for Trump around the fact that "we already know he's a crook, so who cares?" My response was probably an eye roll and an unflattering "uh.... OK." A week or two ago, he mentions to me that he bought some bottle of bourbon that was specially made (probably just specially labeled) "45-47" in honor of Trump. I told him that I politely declined. He said, no, he hadn't received it yet. He had gotten the run around about it. The bottle is paid for, but gosh darn it, the bottle was lost in transit at one point and then suddenly it showed in the system as delivered. But it hadn't been delivered. I just nodded and went about my business. Quote

A true open market has no barriers, not just no tariffs, but no regulatory differences, no government subsidies, no special tax or licensing...etc. Additionally I took his statements as tariffs could lead to an open market, not that imposing them makes it an open market. Country A is a capitalist country that makes X, Country B is communist and makes Y with subsidies. Country A determines that subsidies allow B to make Y 4% cheaper due to those, so they agree to a 4% tariff on product Y to make up for the difference as X doesn't have that benefit. We're essentially in a fair market at this point. If Country B could decide to stay here, could decide to subsidize further to get an economic advantage (assuming it doesn't also cause a trade agreement reset) or what people that like tariffs for purposes of exacting change would say, Country B may push their company to be more efficient, eliminating the need for subsidies and pushing Country A to drop the tariff to match them, so now there are no further barriers, hence an open market. All that said, what MAGA doesn't get is that trade is not simply we both build cars and we want open markets to sell them to each other, or we both build phones, etc. It's I'm really good at producing X, you're good at Y, I'll sell you excess X, you sell me excess Y. We all benefit from efficiencies at being really good at something specific. This just goes to show that you are always going to be wrong when you try to deal in economic absolutes. Everything is relative - there are no truly 'free markets', they all have some kind of constraint - though the degree can very widely. There is no truly 'free' enterprise - every operation in a just state must in a way that meets social necessities such as safety. Etc, etc right down the line for any economic organizing principle you want to pick. All these idealized concepts are useful intellectual constructs, but none of them can ever be applied rigorously in the real world because the real world is far more complex and messy and full of humans with their own life imperatives for idealizations to be more than starting off points. mtutiger Posted March 14 Posted March 14 From JB Pritzker's Chief of Staff.... I put it here because this is the thread most visited at this point, but it's worth pondering as we relitigate past grievances while there's the reality in front of us that needs to be dealt with. We need solidarity in this moment. 1 Quote
