This "my opening bid is I kill you" routine is going to result in people ignoring him soon.

It's also gonna result in them looking east for closer relations (ie. China)

If the end result of "we will destroy Colombia" is they invite China and Cuba even if just to piss us off...yeah.

Felon lover says what?

Assuming that the deal involves humane transport, which was Colombia's reason for turning back the migrants, I'm not even clear what was accomplished here given that Colombia was already assuming deportees prior to this.

Looks like another case of the arsonists putting out the fire and expecting an Attaboy lol

Has Trump ended the Ukraine/Russia War yet, as he promised he would prior to the inauguration?

He said he would end it in 1 day. We're past 1 day of his administration and it sadly hasn't ended. Maybe don't make such grandiose statements like that.

Unless I am reading this wrong, and reading the statistics from ICE wrong, it looks like the Obama and Biden Administrations carried out at least some deportation/repatriations of people back to Colombia. Given that Obama was once Deporter in Chief and Biden carried out as many or more deportations than both Obama and Trump, I would presume many of the 38,500 removals from the US back to Colombia occurred under Biden's watch. So this notion that Colombia never accepted people back, or Biden failed to get them to accept anyone back, seems not to be true.

of course removal numbers to Mexico are a bit meaningless because there is a constant back and forth - with Mexico you have to get at the net inflow-outgo, which is more complicated than just repatriations.

I was just specifically referencing Colombia due to the false perception that somehow Colombian migrants and undocumented immigrants weren't actually ever sent back there.

If you threaten me you change the dynamic of our relationship.  I won't be your friend.

If you treat all our interactions as zero sum I won't be your friend.

I understand. I was just commenting on not taking the scale of the particular Mx number too seriously since it led the chart.

Although it makes perfect sense that a man without friends would not understand friendship at any level.

Quote

Supervisors inside the National Cancer Institute received a series of commands from on high late this week that, if left in place for any length of time, will grind its operations to a halt. The Trump administration is trying to kill people.

According to a source within the NCI with knowledge of the moves, the list of Don’ts is long: All scheduled travel through April must be canceled, and all registrations for upcoming conferences — including virtual ones — are gone; as is the case across the National Institutes of Health (of which the NCI is a part), all purchasing is frozen using government purchase cards; researchers cannot submit abstracts to meetings or manuscripts to journals; hiring is stopped entirely for 90 days — though it is unclear if that time frame may change — and all job listings must be pulled down; and of course, no external communications at all, and any activity remotely considered DEI-adjacent is stopped

It is difficult to overstate the damage this can do to both cancer research and treatment. The NCI has around 3,500 employees, and is the largest cancer research funding body in the world. It supports the dozens of NCI-designated Cancer Centers around the country, and helps coordinate clinical trials across more than 3,000 sites. Though the list of prohibitions didn’t necessarily target them directly, there are reports of canceled appointments for patients set to enter some of those clinical trials.

Across NIH, researchers as well as administrators and support staff are some combination of terrified, angry, and confused. One employee told me they simply didn’t know what to do — meaning, literally how to spend the work day — once the commands to stop all purchasing, travel, and more came down. Another source within a different NIH institute said, “I feel like every time we try to keep things moving, we get another directive to stop.” Another pointed out that this will also affect training the next generation of doctors and researchers — interviewing for the NIH’s Graduate Partnership Program, in which graduate students at other universities work in NIH labs, has been suspended, and if that doesn’t lift within a month or so then there will likely be no such visitors next year.

On a longer time scale, if NCI-supported trials really are delayed or suspended for a meaningful amount of time, that means delayed discoveries, delayed drug approvals, delayed potential treatments for people whose cancer will not itself agree to such a delay. And more immediately, putting a stop to NCI activities means actual patients awaiting treatment will have to wait longer. This is attempted murder, plain and simple.

Among other things being impacted by Trump's moves: cancer research.

They are just afraid of smart people.  Intelligence is "woke".

all regimes with a taste for dictatorial power are. It follows from the need to control information. Intelligent people are the sources of information/narratives contrary to the regime's narratives. Exactly why Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Putin, all killed intellectuals with such vigor. Trumps proclivities are exactly the same even if his power to do anything about it is more limited, for the time being.

The cruelty is the whole point.

He likes that NIH and NCI employees are panicked-it makes him feel like a big man.

And his supporters like that too-and if their medical treatment is impacted they'll probably blame it on 'the libruls.'
