MichiganCardinal Posted January 21 Posted January 21 The problem with the Bears is that it’s not a quick turnaround. It’s easy for people look at the offense and see weapons and a mobile QB and think they should be a nine-win team from the jump, but you have a porous OL and a QB who is seeing ghosts, to go with a mediocre defense at best… How many OL can you draft and start immediately? I think you need at least three replacements to make that a strength, and Poles doesn’t inspire confidence to find one, let alone three. Meanwhile, that very GM who I don’t trust to find an OL doesn’t have two or three years. He’s got one. Just seems like a train that’s already on the tracks to a two-and-done, even if it’s not even Johnson’s fault. Quote

Ben was getting hammered on a thread on Reddit. But I don't care about stranger's opinions, I have my own. And it's basically what you said in this post. I appreciate what he did for our players and offense but it's going to be much different in Chicago. In Detroit, he had the players to execute his offensive plays, very good players. Even if they have 2 good drafts, the Bears would have to hit on multiple positions to get their talent level up and that's just on offense. I'm not sure how their salary cap situation is but again....unless they target the right players, that could set them back. I really would have thought the Bears would have wanted Glenn before Johnson. But whatever, see 'ya. Quote

The whole world knows Williams holds the ball in the pocket longer than any QB in football. Quote

Motown Bombers Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I'm surprised Glenn wanted the Jets job. Guess the upside is if Rodgers returns, his diva act isn't going to fly with Glenn. Quote
Jimbo Posted January 21 Author Posted January 21 If I had a choice I would keep out team intact (coaching wise). Although now that it seems like we're going to lose both, it gives Holmes/Campbell some opportunities and I have full faith in them. It amuses me seeing people bash Johnson all of sudden. Its just fans still needing therapy after Sat. Losing Glen will give us a 3rd compensation pick which will be nice since we don't have one this year. What fans have to grasp is we are actually a destination now. Coaches have to feel like being on the Lions offers them the best opportunity because of the talent we have. Quote
Hongbit Posted January 21 Posted January 21 This a great move for AG because it’s the Jets. If he can turn it around, he’s a legend and a head coach for a long time. If he can’t, the rest of the league won’t hold it against him. Saleh still got HC interviews this cycle because it was the Jets. Worst case is he gets fired in 1 or 2 years, he’s able to collect on his contract until he gets his pick of top DC jobs. He’s back where he started but with HC experience on his resume and a whole lot more cash. Quote
Hongbit Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Rumored to be a $13M a year deal. That’s $2M more than Campbell. It’s gross that he went to the most hated team but people can’t be mad at him for that kind of money. Quote
Motor City Sonics Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Other teams plundering your coaches to give them higher status is an indication that you're doing things right. I trust Campbell and Holmes to find the right replacements, but more importantly, I trust them to go in a different direction if they realize it isn't working. Quote
Nate7474 Posted January 22 Posted January 22 We were always going to lose a good portion of our coaching staff this offseason. You can’t have as much sustained success over a couple years and that not happen. Also Glenn and Johnson are going to want to take atleast 1 or 2 assistants with them. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if this was talked about with Campbell and Holmes before hand as they both seem like managers who want their employees to have success and will help them get there. With that said with openings come opportunities. We have the talented roster and leadership that top young and experienced coaching talent is going to want to be apart of. I have no doubt we will be able to recruit a top notch coaching staff. There will be growing pains as they all adjust to one another and the players. Because of that on top of a tough looking road schedule I expect a step back in record next season. I still expect playoffs but would not be surprised to see us fighting for the wildcard and/or division until the last week. Quote
Jimbo Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 Mack said he is coming back next year. Probably sign with Chargers again but this could be a one year option. If we want to keep our core intact for many years your going to have to find players like this. Someone mentioned franchising Davis and that is something they will look to do. Like I said in the first post. Every big free agent you sign, could mean losing someone else. The Lions built this team through the draft and besides Sat's loss, its been beyond the success anyone could of imagined. So I can't imagine Holmes wanted to change that direction. I think they can build for the now and still keep success for a long time. Some fans might want them to go for it next year at all costs. That is definitely an option. I personally want them to continue the path they're going because even going all in doesn't mean you are guarantee to win it all. This season I feel like we were the most talented team although injuries caught up with us. I know the offense and Goff had a bad game but if you had half of the injuries (which is what most teams deal with), it changes the whole way (strategy) you go in the playoffs. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted January 22 Posted January 22 I think they want to sign Davis. They restructured his contract which moved money to next year. I also don't think they traded a 3rd for a one year rental. This is a 15 win team that when healthy looked like a historically dominant team, they don't need to do anything radical. Quote
RatkoVarda Posted January 22 Posted January 22 (edited) do they get comp pick for Williams to NE? Edited January 22 by RatkoVarda Quote

Hongbit Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Hiring Ben Johnson is first thing Ryan Poles has done that impressed me. I view him as a bottom 10 GM in the league. This is going to be a huge awakening for Ben when he realizes the difference from Brad Holmes. I don’t trust Poles to be able to rebuild the OL and add significant pieces to get better on defense. I can also see Ben bringing Dan’s aggressive approach to 4th down only to have it backfire due to poor blocking or pass protection. Quote
