The cap has gone up so we will have to see what other LBs get. Shephard is the coordinator now and coached Barnes since he was drafted so they would be better off staying in house.

This is part of it too. Everything will sound like a lot in relation to our reference, which is past contracts under different cap structures.

i dont mind the lions rewarding their own.  they did it with anzalone and i thought it was dumb, but it worked out.  barnes has improved every year so far so they think that will continue.

it probably could have been a little lower with a little less guaranteed money, but its not outrageous.

Feels like a lot for a player that struggles to get home on a roster where’s he’s behind both Anzalone and Campbell, but what do I know.

He plays a different position than those two, he was playing more in a SAM role before he got injured, so I think they see a still young player that has some pass rushing chops. Not a lot of sacks but you could see the improvements in his game before the injury.

Also, as has been mentioned, the cap is going up significantly so you can't compare this to previous deals.

As long as Za'Darius is coming back I'm good...

not on that contract.

wisely, the lions released him this morning.  they can bring him back on a better deal if they choose, although there are much better choices out there, albeit more expensive choices.

I'm guessing they tried to re-work the deal before releasing him. He was the best of a lot of bad options at the trade deadline, and brought a great personality to the team, but he was conspicuously absent when it mattered most, both against Buffalo and Washington.

I do expect them to address the position twice more this offseason, once with a free agent and once in the first two rounds of the draft. They need to lock up Hutchinson first though. Crosby and Garrett are just driving his price up right now.

If they can get him back on a contract that works for the Lions I am perfectly fine with getting him back here.

I don't consider either him or Marcus or any other FA they could sign as the perfect compliment to Hutch however.

I would look to draft the future DE compliment to Hutch.

I look at Za'Darius and Davenport as the "vets" that teach the younger guys all their moves, all their "vet knowledge", and start until the new guy is ready to take over a starting spot. It could be a 1st round guy or a 3rd round project.

Call him Shemar Stewart. I love the guy. 4.5 sacks over 3 years. But mad pass-rushing "potential". Or at least that's what "they" say... How does he go from potential to reality? I think those two guys would help him along. And then turn into the 1st, or the "key", backups behind Hutch and Stewart as we go on next year's playoff run and win the next Super Bowl...

Oops, sorry, I have too many fantasies and dreams and sugar plums rattling around in my head...

But I'd still be good signing back Za'Darius... at the right price.

I hate drafting guys in the first who have so little production.  It definitely makes you question the work ethic-especially on a good line like he was.  I know most of you don’t like Sawyer, but he has shown the production and by all reports is one of the hardest workers.  I think he’d be a great fit opposite Hutch, both in the run and pass games.

PS:

I think he would do better if was not the "ONLY" guy.

Which, basically, he was by that time. Last man standing and I don't think he's a "do-it-alone" guy, certainly not at this stage of his career. He needs Hutch, and McNeil, and any other help we can get on the DL because... he just does. I don't think that makes him a no value guy... Just a DE with a "specific, veteran" value. Whatever that is. The Lions, and he, if they can get on the same page for a contract... will have that understood.

How ofter has Brad traded up? It seems like every draft, he makes some surprise moves. And they usually work out. Maybe instead of using draft capital on an expensive veteran, he'll use that capital to move up. Into the top 10? Maybe we should start looking at earlier edge rushers? Or he'll move up and take a WR. It's Brad, he'll surprise us. 😅
