Looks to be a smallish LB like Reeves-Maybin or Rodriguez. Reeves-Maybin was also a big special teams player. Stuard probably takes the Reeves-Maybin role. Not sure what Rodriguez status is for the start of the season.

I thought they needed and edge opposite of Hutch before he went down. I'm not expecting a Hendrickson level addition but they need better than oft injured Davenport and Paschal on the other side if they want Superbowl aspirations IMO. Maybe they draft a guy but I don't think should be shoehorned into drafting for need. They need another guy.

Love the Levi signing, shocked that he didn't get better offers on the open market. They desperately needed somebody to fill the Alim gap and this works.

the rest of the league must still be concerned about levi's extensive injury history.  that's understandable with how little he's played.

with that said, the market is throwing around crazy money for defensive linemen so its possible we are overrating levi a bit.

and always remember that the amount put out by the agents for some of these deals is not the actual amount the player will earn.

Zeitler signed with the Titans 1 year $9m. That's a big loss for the Lions, as of now they have a rookie in Mahogany and a past his prime Glasgow at guard. Not ideal. Real significant holes at edge and guard that need to be addressed.

I think they end up taking a Guard early on in the draft this year. I've thought that before losing Zeitler and think it now more so than ever.

Mahogany is a second-year player who played well when given the opportunity. I'm fine with starting Mahagony; I just would have rather signed Zeitler and released Glasgow and/or put him on the bench. I wonder if Glagow would be better going back to RG?

holmes doesnt like to box himself in for the draft.  they might sign someone else at guard before the season starts.

its also possible that they like some of the RFAs they had last year.  Im surprised glasgow wasnt cut or renegitiated given how poor he was last season and hia age.

they may feel zeitler is too old for that kind of money.  too risky.

If they sign a guard, it will likely be for depth. They also have Manu, who they may think is ready to be on the active roster. Mahogany was really good in his limited snaps. His performance on the field matched what we heard in practice. He shot up the depth chart. I would be surprised if someone other than Mahogany is starting.

they might keep glasgow around because he can play center.  manu is a project tackle but they could move him inside, i suppose.

either way, i'm not too broken up about zeitler given his age.

That's exactly it. People say, they'll draft an edge and guard at the draft but Holmes never drafts for need so i doubt he wants to go into the draft being forced to draft for need so I have to think that with this money he has to play with that there's something fairly significant coming before the draft.

I saw a report that Zeitler wanted to sign closer to where his family lives so it seems like Holmes didn't have much of a choice.

Even if they sign players though this draft is still built to help the Lions in those specific areas...

1) The D-Line is loaded in the draft... so I could see a pass-rusher in the 1st couple of rounds and a DT project in the 3rd/4th. Just a guess.

2) There are a lot of good-looking guards rated from the end of the 1st through the 4th round... I expect Brad to grab one that he likes. 

3) There are only a few bigger cover corners with speed... I'd like to get one in the 2nd or 3rd... Just a personal preference because I like having at least one guy that can be really physical with the bigger receivers in the NFL. I still have thoughts of "The Legion of Boom"...

4) I think bigger wide receivers are almost always available. Some in the later rounds. Never know which ones might have a chance but I'd like to see Brad take another swing... Think of Puka in the 5th round standing next to Amon-Ra and Jameson...

Glasgow played well last year between Sewell and Ragnow. And this year Mahagony and Zeitler did as well. Playing between those two might be the best situation in the NFL for a RG.

I expect Manu to make the roster. They can’t justify not dressing a player for two consecutive years. But I believe he is more of a tackle project than a guard project. I imagine he will be the second reserve tackle behind Skipper.

At guard, it may well be Mahagony. I would like to see them pickup a serviceable 6th lineman though. That’s what they did in 2023, when they didn’t trust Vaitai to stay healthy, and it’s how Glasgow first came here. Dalton Risner and Will Hernandez are both older guys who had bad injuries in 2024 and are a little older, probably attractive candidates for a one-year deal.

Mahogany played well at LG when he filled in for Glasgow. Mahogany is a natural RG but I would still move Mahogany to LG and Glasgow to RG.

Was it Risner's wife who complained the fans in Detroit were terrible and mean to her?

It seems to be the RG next to Sewell tends to have a good year. So I’d put whoever they deem weakest in that spot.

With Hutch and McNeil playing at the level they were playing at before the Hutch injury (not to mention Levi), they did not need anyone else. The problem with having a DPOY candidate is that if he gets injured you can't replace him. But they will use their first round pick (and second and third?) on DL.

Mahogany is going to be a stud. He was already an upgrade when he played last year. Not sure what the deal was with Glasgow, maybe he had a lingering injury last year, maybe he struggled at LG, maybe both. But Mahogany will upgrade the line and if Brad thinks Glasgow is the weak link there are replacement players that can be had on a one year deal.
