I don't consider either him or Marcus or any other FA they could sign as the perfect compliment to Hutch however. I would look to draft the future DE compliment to Hutch. I look at Za'Darius and Davenport as the "vets" that teach the younger guys all their moves, all their "vet knowledge", and start until the new guy is ready to take over a starting spot. It could be a 1st round guy or a 3rd round project. Call him Shemar Stewart. I love the guy. 4.5 sacks over 3 years. But mad pass-rushing "potential". Or at least that's what "they" say... How does he go from potential to reality? I think those two guys would help him along. And then turn into the 1st, or the "key", backups behind Hutch and Stewart as we go on next year's playoff run and win the next Super Bowl... Oops, sorry, I have too many fantasies and dreams and sugar plums rattling around in my head... But I'd still be good signing back Za'Darius... at the right price. smith wasnt very good for detroit last year and is now a year older. i guess if they can get him for cheap it would be ok. like they did with davenport. but there are lots of other options out there who are younger and with more upside OR better veterans. they need depth up front considering mcneil is out for most of next season and levi is a free agent, so they might have to settle for smith on a small deal. i always felt the idea of hutch learning moves from old vets to be the most overrated, fan driven thing in the world. hutch has more moves now than smith or davenport have ever had. 1984Echoes Posted Monday at 02:54 AM Posted Monday at 02:54 AM No, I'm not talking about Hutch... he has the moves. I'm talking about the all the other pass-rush hopefuls on the team (now or drafted in the near future) who may have not had the technique instruction that Hutch had. Guys who have some "project" in them in which, they may never turn into Hutch (which of course I would not expect), but maybe they turn into a future Za'Darius Smith. IE: ZS 2015 5.5 sacks, 2016 1.0, 2017 3.5, 2018 8.5, 2019 13.5, 2020 12.5... etc. I think that works opposite Hutch. ZS started out slow and only really picked it up in year 4 and thereafter. Quote
Hongbit Posted Monday at 02:00 PM Posted Monday at 02:00 PM I’m not expecting much from the Lions today. Lots of teams that won’t make the playoffs will overpay this week. Hearing that the desperation along with raising salary cap is going to create some head scratching deals for average to good players. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted Monday at 02:07 PM Posted Monday at 02:07 PM It's usually Holmes m.o. to let the first wave of free agents sign and then dive into the second wave. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted Monday at 02:12 PM Posted Monday at 02:12 PM Twitter doesn't appear to be working so hopefully they start posting all the Lions free agent signings on Bluesky. 1 Quote
MichiganCardinal Posted Monday at 02:45 PM Posted Monday at 02:45 PM I think most of the guys who are signed today go for close to their asking price. Later on is where negotiations really come into play, and that's where Holmes seems to excel. Quote

Mr.TaterSalad Posted Monday at 03:32 PM Posted Monday at 03:32 PM Brad Holmes isn't even at the dealership. He's on Craigslist looking through the rebuilt wrecks with a new title. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted Monday at 03:34 PM Posted Monday at 03:34 PM Brad Holmes is the car factory. He builds the cars in house. It's more like Alfa Romeo, sexy and fast but need service often. Quote

Motown Bombers Posted Monday at 05:09 PM Posted Monday at 05:09 PM There are some absurd contracts going out now. Most them by teams not considered Super Bowl contenders. Holmes will feast on the leftovers. 1 Quote
Motown Bombers Posted Monday at 05:11 PM Posted Monday at 05:11 PM Not a bad contract to be honest. Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted Monday at 05:16 PM Posted Monday at 05:16 PM I would have signed Davis to that deal I think. We can't go out there with Arnold and Rakestraw as our starting CBs. They have to make a commitment to a veteran guy now, be it another trade or signing. Even though Davis had a better year than Kendall Fuller, I'm still a bit puzzled that we traded a 3rd round pick for Davis for a one year rental, as opposed to signing Fuller for the cost of no pick. 1 Quote
RandyMarsh Posted Monday at 05:17 PM Posted Monday at 05:17 PM Do we get a comp pick for Davis? Quote

papalawrence Posted Monday at 05:53 PM Posted Monday at 05:53 PM Lions just signed DJ Reed 3/48! 1 Quote
lordstanley Posted Monday at 06:14 PM Posted Monday at 06:14 PM Same age as Davis, both have played 7 years. Reed has played 12 more games than Davis, including a total of 8 more the past 3 years. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted Monday at 06:16 PM Posted Monday at 06:16 PM Reed may actually be better than Davis. He isn’t a downgrade. 1 Quote
