I wonder at what point do the companies who have worked their asses off to sustain their place in the marketplace in the face of well, all the reasons both internal and external, just throw their hands up in the air in the face of Elon Musk deciding winners and losers without having divested himself of his deep financial interests. finally get around to reading...oh, its about the tariffs and the auto industry fearing huge calamities. I guess, the insider talk about CAFE standards is curvy couch bullcrap. Quote Crain's Detroit Business, citing three supplier executives from different companies, first reported the delay. Analysts said one likely reason for the move is significant uncertainty surrounding the auto industry and economy under the new Trump administration. President Donald Trump has proposed raising tariffs as high as 25% across goods from all countries and on Tuesday said auto tariffs would likely be at that level, which could raise prices for carmakers who import parts to make products in the United States. While Ford’s exposure to imports is lower than some of its competitors, the unknown of what changes might come from Trump could be enough to make Ford exercise caution. I'm sure they would love to produce cars that run on sub-bituminous coal for the people who think the environment is in need of a good rape. Quote

The one thing I have found in recent years though is data security (which I realize is an absolute necessity) is now preventing me from getting the most out of computers. It can be paralyzing at times and it will only get worse. At our HS we had an already old IBM 1400 series (i think) computer which was about the size of a large office desk. It had 1000 tiny ferrite cores strung on wires for RAM. That was 1K of 'Core' memory. Hard to remember the efficiency pressure early programmers worked under when that was all the machine memory you had to work with. 1 Quote

The thing that the curvy couch crowd doesn't get is that these companies have invested heavily for years in making cars fuel efficient. And that the elimination of standards is not going to automatically create a shift away from fuel efficiency within their business model. Particularly with the sunk costs, the desires of the consumer and how cyclical elections can be in this country Same thing with oil companies as well. Opening up more areas for oil exploration when oil is sitting between $75-$90 per barrel doesn't mean more drilling in these areas will ultimately happen Edited February 19 by mtutiger Quote

romad1 Posted February 20 Author Posted February 20 (edited) There is this scene in the German movie Stalingrad where the squad gather around their officer after countless degradations and desperate situations. Finally, after the high command lie to them about something or another the officer agrees to break out from the pocket with "I no longer feel bound by my oath" which is pretty shocking for a German Army officer to say. The good news: A lot, lot of honorable people in DC are doing the opposite and digging in against this wave of anti-Constitutional thuggery. Hopefully the courts can help many.
