They don’t like being called Mormons. They prefer being called Latter-Day Saints.

Can you blame  them? Who wouldn't want to be referred to as a saint? 😉

Mormons prefer to be referred to as Latter-day Saints to emphasize their continuity with Christianity, a continuity that Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants see as distantly adjacent.

The only reason I know any of this is that parts of Idaho are heavily Mormon although the county I live in where Boise‘s located is only 14% Mormon.

If you’ve ever watched “Napoleon Dynamite,” Franklin County in Eastern Idaho where it was filmed is 91.5% Mormon. That area of the state is where all the potatoes are grown. People think that the entire state of Idaho is covered with potatoes, but it’s just one small area. It’s a tribute to the marketing genius of the Idaho Potato Commission to convince the entire world that the whole state is covered with potatoes like one big Victory Garden in World War II.

Also some in northern Idaho around Couer D' Alene. I know because we used to follow the potato & onion trucks and pick up refuse after the trucks would hit a bump or navigate a curve too fast.

Right over the border in Washington they grow some wicked good potatoes, just west of Coeur d’Alene, but in the 1950s they never got Marilyn Monroe to advertise for them by wearing an outfit made of potato gunnysacks so Idaho has this reputation for potatoes.

The Red Wings tried to get Salma Hayek to advertise and boost octopus sales

When ESPN got MLB in 1990 that was huge.  Baseball on nearly every night?  A daily "Baseball tonight"?  It was heaven.  Early on in the deal was when Fernando and Dave Stewart threw no hitters on the same night.  ESPN showed both as it was happening.  What a glorious time.

It might have been one of those "you had to be there" kind of things considering how prevalent sports media is today.

Yeah i guess it’s probably facile to say it’s because ESPN is a football-and-basketball network—although those are their two top sports by far—because a lot of what they do as well is soccer, women’s sports, and college sports of all types. They are almost as much a lifestyle as sports network.

So wait............MLB wants out of the ESPN deal?     Because of "minimal coverage"?

Want to as the NHL how separating from ESPN went for them?

Be careful here, Rob.

ESPN also wanted out as MLB wouldn’t agree to a reduction in $ ESPN had agreed to in the original deal.

My favorite was in 1998 during the home run chase. I was a HUGE Ken Griffey Jr. fan at that time, like my fandom for him trumped even the Tigers at that point and for awhile there he was right there with McGwire and Sosa. I had internet but the CPU was in my parents room so wasn't really accessible to teenage me at all times so watching Baseball Tonight was really the only way I could keep up with how Jr. was doing that night.

Baseball Tonight would always do their gingle and cut to a highlight of the HR whenever one was hit, so anytime that would hit I would get all excited hoping it was gonna be a Griffey home run. Such good memories.

I lived in Seattle from 1992-2000 and went to a few hundred Mariners games. Always tried to go when Randy Johnson pitch still the nastiest pitcher I ever saw in person. I was actually at Nolan Ryan's last game when he blew out his arm. Yes, Griffey owned that town. People were shocked when he wanted to leave for Cinncy.

Yeah I can only imagine how big he was there given how popular he was all over the rest of the US at that time, particularly with kids my age. Being in middle school and High School during his peak Mariners days I can tell you that him and the Mariners were without a doubt the most popular team and player at my school.

I think it was a combination of us being too young to really get into those great 80s Tigers team along with them being so bad in the years I'm talking about led to kids my age just not having a huge connection with them. Atleast from what I can remember with my friends and other kids from school the Mariners, Indians and Braves were the teams that everybody gravitated to with the Mariners being the favorite.

Oh. My. Effing. God.

I have always been in full agreement that Rose deserved to be banned from baseball.  However, MLBs partnership with gambling organizations makes it hard for me to care anymore.
