Someone spotted Cossa at the Grand Rapids airport, flying out to join the team in Colorado

would be a nice fairy tale ending if they let him start and he stole a game or two to get them to the playoffs, but we know he'll likely be sitting in reserve.

agreed but in a way...so what?  if they were in a position to make a cup run then maybe.

honestly, did you want them to pay first round picks for depth defensemen this year?  i didnt.  it was wise not to.

the real question is why they are still not in the position to do that, and as you point out, the blame for that lies with yzerman's regime.

here's a question about yzerman: he brought in brisebois and verbeek to tampa and helped build a juggernaut.  both those guys - especially brisebois, but verbeek has been off to a solid start in anaheim - have been successful elsewhere.  perhaps yzerman made the wrong hires in detroit simply to placate the red wings "alumni" club?  draper, kronwall, lidstrom, cleary, fischer....perhaps these guys arent good enough?

whomever brought you this offseason should be sacked for sure.

Isn't there anything in between contender and not making the playoffs?  Or giving up ASL or ND and first rounder for old, useless defenseman with a big contract?  The rebuild is a process, and making the playoffs is a step in the process.  Losing in the first round is not for nothing.  It's a learning experience that can't be replicated by anything else.  It's good for the players, the fans and the organization.  It took the Wings 10 years to get a Cup AFTER they made the playoffs for the first time.

Not to mention the entertainment value. One playoff series, even in a losing effort, typically has as much excitement as the rest of the regular season combined. The Tigers making the playoffs last year and winning the wild card round and hosting two playoff games had value and was exciting, even if they weren't legit contenders to get past the Yankees let alone the Dodgers. We know the Pistons can't compete with Boston or Cleveland, but they'll make the playoffs and should give the Knicks or the Pacers a challenge, and that's enough to make their season better than the Wings'.  At least last year the Wings' final half-dozen games or so were a playoff atmosphere with some last-minute heroics. This year might not get that.

ABSOLUTELY, the annual adds of young players have gone, are going well. They’ve all done well except maybe Bergrenn, who is pretty ‘meh’.  The margin of failure is exactly the poor performance with the NHL moves.

I’ve attended two games in Colorado. One, in October 1976, was Atlanta Flames @ Colorado Rockies. About 3000 people in attendance, including Krazy George banging on a drum.

The second was in the 1999 playoffs.  Still at McMorran Arena. Two-time defending Cup champions Red Wings won a decisive shutout to take 2-0 series lead and seemed to be in total control.  Saw Clod Lemieux leaving in his exotic sports car after the game.  Shockingly, that was the Wings’ last win of the season.

What should really have the Wings kicking themselves is how poorly other bubble teams have played and how low of a points total might be enough to make it into the playoffs.

In the West, 8th place St. Louis has 83 points with 9 to play and the Wings would be 11 points out and probably just a few games away from being mathematically eliminated. Vancouver has 80 points with 10 to play and Calgary has 79 points with 12 to play. Could easily see Vancouver or Calgary hitting 94 points but still missing out.

Meanwhile in the East, 8th place Montreal only has 75 points with 12 to play, while the Islanders and Rangers both have 74 points with 11 and 10 games remaining respectively. Montreal even going 7-4-1 would as likely as not get in with 90 points. Last year the Wings' 91 points had them lose out on 91-point Washington on a tiebreaker. Wings, at 72 points with 11 to play, need to go 9-2 to hit 90 points and that's not going to happen the way they're playing and with 5 of their final 6 games being on the road.  That said, home wins tonight against Ottawa and slumping Boston on Saturday would give the illusion of being "close".

The Wings had 30 points in 34 games for Lalonde, for a .444 points percentage. If they had played even at that lousy pace last 13 games (11 pts instead of 6 pts) they’d have 5 extra points and would be in good playoff position.

Halfway through the 2nd period and it's 3-0 Ottawa and the Wings are 0 for 5 on the powerplay. Is this the lowest of a month of deep lows?

dont forget boston on saturday!
