lordstanley Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 In March 2019, "one of the worst teams in NHL history" that Yzerman inherited a few weeks later went 8-6-1 for 17pts that month on the way to a 74 point season. Man, would have killed for a March like that the past few years: March 2022: 3-8-3 (9 pts) March 2023: 5-9-1 (11 pts) March 2024: 3-9-2 (8 pts) March 2025: 1-6-0 (2 pts with 7 March games to go) Quote

But the 2019 team had four 20-goal scorers under 25 years old. Two of them were 30-goal scoring centres. Plus had a future top pairing/top 4 d-man in 20-year old Hronek. The cupboard wasn’t totally bare. Quote

Expand i dont rate bertuzzi or mantha. bert is such a flawed player who freelances and pays 0 attention to his teammates or defense. mantha is a flake. larkin was a foundational piece and hronek turned into a really good defenseman. buddha Posted March 16 Posted March 16 not a lot of jump in this game. early start maybe has them a little off. Quote
lordstanley Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 Wings holding their own against a stronger team. 1-0 Wings late in the 2nd. Quote
buddha Posted March 16 Posted March 16 albert with a great little move to score. one of the knock on effects of copp going out was having to yake kasper off the top line. it hasnt been nearly as effective without him on there doing the dirty work. Quote
buddha Posted March 16 Posted March 16 another really nice goal. good board work by debrincat to get it to kane who passed to gustaffson who put a nice paas on kasper's stick for a tap in. of course, kasper was in the right place and going aggressively to the net. wings are all over them. dont blow it. lordstanley Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 (edited) Jennifer Botterill is as dull as bathwater. If your HR department insists you hire a woman as commentator, at least find one with sass and energy, like that former gold medalist Tara Lipinski who does Olympics figure skating with her gay best friend on NBC. buddha Posted March 17 Posted March 17 i was totally wrong about kasper, thought he played out as nothing more than a third line center/pk guy. a younger jt compher. on draft night all the experts said he didnt have enough skill and offense and stevie disagreed. lookijg good for stevie's side so far. 1984Echoes Posted March 17 Posted March 17 (edited) We have three 2nd round defenseman at Grand Rapids that the Org seems like they are high on... Wallinder (LH), Tuomisto (RH) and Buium (LH). Can any of these guys stick in the NHL? Even if it's as a 3rd pair, I would consider that a plus. If one turs into a serious defensive defenseman (let's say Wallinder shows he can pair with Seider on the 1st pair) then even without much offense that would be a major plus... But I haven't seen any Grand Rapids play... I don't know what they look like on the ice or if they have enough upside to make it in the NHL, as 3rd pair or otherwise. Buium had some offensive upside, at least when he was playing at Denver... I watched some of his play... very agile. Not as much O as his brother which is why he was a 2nd rounder instead of a top 10 pick... But I always thought he had a very high level of talent. Like a young Walman with a slightly higher upside. But that's just me. I want to sign Noah Dobson this summer, I believe he's a UFA. Pair him with Edvinsson for a dangerous 2nd pair that should rival Seider on the 1st pair... And... My secret wish upon a Birthday Candle is that Buium shows enough to eventually earn his way up to 1st pair with Seider. Probably dreaming... But I have been known to be a bit optimistic from time to time... Edited March 17 by 1984Echoes Quote
lordstanley Posted March 17 Author Posted March 17 (edited) 2nd rounders pretty much come down to luck, so I don't really hold it against a GM for not getting hits in that round, but they can sure be nice bonuses that kickstart the rebuild. It's a numbers game that unfortunately hasn't fallen the Wings' way so far, but 2nd rounders do take longer to develop so we only have a year or two of them so far to evaluate. Canucks got 51 points out of their 2019 2nd rounder Nils Hoeglander last year, John Peterka has 51 points in 61 games this season for Buffalo as a 2020 2nd rounder, another 2020 2nd rounder Brock Faber made the U.S. 4 Nations team already as defenseman, Matthew Knies is a 2021 2nd rounder who put up 45 points last season for the Leafs (arguably inflated from playing with offensive stars), and Lane Hutson of the Habs is a 2022 2nd rounder who is one of this year's top rookies. Again, the fact that the Wings don't have one of those yet isn't that much of a knock on Yzerman, cause there are way more misses than hits down there league-wide, but until one breaks through I hesitate to say Yzerman has been "great" at drafting. Good or very good is fair enough. Edited March 17 by lordstanley Quote
