Tork hit safely on a pitch middle-middle, a pitch up and away, and a pitch down and in. I don't think you would have seen that watching him early last year. ST pitching requires a big a grain of salt, but at least today he wasn't waiting for perfect pitches in the zone. 2 Quote
papalawrence Posted Saturday at 04:10 AM Posted Saturday at 04:10 AM 2 dingers on 3-3 night for Tork. One dinger opposite field, something he has been working on. Also, Mize, holy cow! If his command and splitter continue on that level it will be difficult to send him down. That's as strong as I have ever seen his stuff. And Montero did struggle badly first inning, but the next 2 innings he looked good, especially his change-up. He'll be back in Toledo but I see him getting a chance in the bigs soon. Maeda, Jobe, Cobb, Mize, Montero for 2 spots. Looks like Manning and likely Montero to Toledo. Good problems to have Quote

Good problems to have At this point a likely scenario is Maeda, Mize, Jobe all keep pitching well, in which case you have to think they just start Jobe in the minors - really nothing to lose there as long as the guy who comes north is legitimately pitching well. Jobe would then 1st call back when someone -again likely Mize or Maeda, eventually stumbles. Edited Saturday at 05:47 AM by gehringer_2 Quote

If Jobe is ready, I think either they go with a 6 man rotation (with Skubal staying on 5 days)or Jobe starts in relief/piggy back starts to limit his innings. The Pirates lost 1 draft pick already and may lose a 2nd by starting Skenes in the minors and he still got a full year service by being top 3 in ROY. I don’t see the Tigers doing that with Jobe the way he’s been pitching. Quote
IdahoBert Posted Saturday at 01:08 PM Posted Saturday at 01:08 PM I was thinking of the six man rotation too, except for our Cy Young winner. Quote

Under the current system, really is no benefit to starting a player who is ready and has ROY potential in the minors. They have less to lose organizationally by starting Mize who has an option and doesn’t qualify for the potential compensation in Toledo than they do Jobe. If Jobe struggles, they can send him down and are in the same position as they would be starting in the minors. Quote
4hzglory Posted Saturday at 01:27 PM Posted Saturday at 01:27 PM I honestly think it was a factor in Tork being on the opening day roster as a rookie as well and-he just should have been sent down when he was struggling. Quote

4hzglory Posted Saturday at 01:35 PM Posted Saturday at 01:35 PM He doesn’t have to win. He could be top 2 or less likely top 3 (I believe) cy young next year. And it doesn’t really matter if a team thinks there’s great odds, if someone is a top candidate-which Jobe is across the industry- you don’t forgo that chance when you have other options. Especially when you still lose the year of control if he does end up top 3. On the other side, it’s also why there is almost zero chance of a top 20 -50 prospect coming up in July/August of any season and losing their eligibility for the next season. Quote

If you want him to be able to pitch in the fall you might have to skip starts and give him short outings early in the season, which is easier to manage in an MiLB setting. It's early though - it may sort itself out before opening day. With pitchers odds are someone is injured before then. 🫤 Edited Saturday at 01:43 PM by gehringer_2 Quote

Not that he would bring back a lot, but someone would take him if he's pitching like has this far in ST Edited Saturday at 01:46 PM by mtutiger Quote

This coaching staff has shown the ability to be creative and can use it to their advantage like pitching chaos was last year. Keep Jove to 4-6 innings per week through mid-May then he can go into the normal rotation and be ok innings wise the rest of the season. Also gets him more familiar with facing MLB hitters. Quote
